DEFENCE OF LONDON FORMATION OF FIRST SQUADRONS [By Telczranh —Press Association—Copyright) Received May 11, 7.53 p.m. LONDON, May 11. ’ The Air Minis: ■’y announces that ' i the formation of the first three balloon barrage squadrons for the defence of London against air raids will begin next Monday. Eventually there will be ten squadrons comprising 500 balloons. The total personnel required will be about 6000 officers and men. The minimum age limit at enlistment is 38. The object of the barrage is to force enemy aircraft to a height at which they can be effectively attacked by fighter ’planes and anti-aircraft guns. Each balloon will be attached by a steel cable to a ground winch, and the cables will be strong enough to bring down any aeroplane colliding with them.
