WOMENS INSTITUTES

IIKANGAARERE On April 9 the Turangaarero Institute arranged a garden party, but as the weather was not kind it was held in the hall, where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Cars laden with well-wishers came from far and near and institute members from Mataroa, Rangiwaea, and Utiku were welcomed by the president, Mrs Bartell. The Mayoress of Taihape, Mrs de Lautour, and the federation president, Mrs Dellow, expressed their pleasure at being present and wished the members “good luck." The various competitions were keenly contested and most of them were ultimately won by Mr Goodwin, who very kindly gave the institute the prizes, which were a-quarter of the takings. Members appreciate the kind thoughs which prompted all the various gifts and thank everyone who helped to make the party a success, thus proving “unity is strength." The monthly meeting on April 22 was well attended by members and their friends. Mrs Bartell took the president’s chair after standing down for two years. Members were all sorry to receive the resignation of the new secretary and appointed Miss Bartell for those duties that day. The next meeting is to be held on Thursday, May 19, to enable the Rev. King to give members an address on how to treat and grow the various kinds of bulbs. Mrs Murdoch was appointed as delegate to the conference held in Wellington in July. As is usual the flower competition was well contested, it being a bunch of flowers, one of each variety out of our gardens and was won by Mrs Murdoch with over 30 different kinds.with Miss Bartell second, in which she displayed some beautiful nerine flowers. Miss Bartell also won the plate of sweets competition, while Mrs Gilchrist came first in the premier flower with a lovely bronze chrysanthemum. The following are the competitions for next moniL: Chocolate cake (not iced), autumn leaves and berries in any vase. Roll call: “My Favourite film star." Hostesses: Mesdames Pohl and Sinclair. During the last few months farewells have been said to a number ol members and still another, Mrs Newton, was asked to accept a parting gift of a cup, saucer and plate, so that when she enjoys her cup of tea she can think of those friends she has left behind her. MAXWELL Maxwell Women’s Institute celebrated its sixth birthday on Tuesday, 3rd. inst. The weather was very rough, but the hall was crowded with members and visitors and a very jolly afternoon was passed. After the singing of the New Zealand Anthem the president welcomed i all present and wished them a happy birthday. The visitors included members of the federation committee and members from Aramoho, Kai Iwl, Kaitoke, Mosston and Westmere. Mrs Staite, in a neat little speech, conveyed ot Mrs Morrison the appreciation of the members and handea her a pretty posy. Mrs Staite (secretary) and Mrs Allcock (treasurer> were also presented with posies. Miss Lucy Morrison, who had been secretary to the Women’s Institute for three years, was the recipient oi a beautiful handbag and a posy from the members, Mrs Staite making the presentation. Mrs Flintoff (Kai Iwi) sang two songs very sweetly and received much applause. Two amusing competitions were won by Mrs Wickett and Mrs Rountree. The competition for knitted vests met with a good response, there being .31 entries, the winners being Mrs Moosman 1, Mrs J. Darbyshire 2, Mrs Brine 3. These lovely vests, together with several bought ones, will be sent to Wanganui for distribution. The competition for bowl of chrysanthemums was won by Mrs Morrison J, Miss L. Morrison 2, Mrs N. Hughes 3. Afternoon lea was much enjoyed and then the birthday cake, made and iced by Miss Edna Morrison, was cut and passed round. Mrs Burns’ guess being the nearest to the correct weight, she received a small prize. Congratulations and good wishes were received from the institutes who were represented and many were received from those who could not attend. A happy afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. The hostesses for June will be Mesdames Blair, Brine, J. Darbyshire, E. Darbyshire and Miss N. Staite. Please remember the catering for the dog trials on Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28.
