CITY FINANCES

CAREFUL ADMINISTRATION MR. G. H. TROTT’S VIEWS The necessity for careful management and administration of the city’s finances was stressed by Mr. G. H. Trott, the Mayoral candidate, at the Citizens’ League meeting in the Gonville Town Hall last evening. "While the city’s indebtedness was reduced by more than £250,000 during the past 10 years, what really affected the ratepayers directly was the amount they were called upon to conli’bute,” said Mr. Trott. During the past four years, the amount of rat? levy had increased by £lB,OOO and ! any increase in the debt by raising furtnei loans would mean, if they, were to maintain the same progress of works and services, that the amount of rates collected would have to be raised. With reference to the increased rates, most of this had been beyond the control of the council as the Harbour Board had required £6BOO more and the Hospital Board £2707 more last year than in previous years. This amount represented about half the increase made and demonstrated the .need for efficient administration by the members of local bodies.
