MISHAP TO ENGINE

TROUBLE ON AWATEA. [ Fsr Press Association. ] WELLINGTON. May 2. A mishap occurred to the starboard engine of the Union Co.’s express liner Awatea when berthing on arrival from Sydney this morning. The cause of the mishap and the nature of the trouble are not yet known. The ship's engineers, assisted by a staff of fitters from the shore, were working on the engines all to-day and throughout the night to locate the trouble and ascertain the extent of the damage. While the Awatea was berthing, an order was telegraphed from the bridge to the engine-room for an astern movement on the starboard engine to help swing the ship into the position. The engineers found that the order could not be carried out, as the turbines would not move astern. The bridge was notified by telephone and Capt. G. B. Morgan at once let go the starboard anchor to check the ship's way and skilfully manoeuvred her alongside the wharf with the port engine and propeller. Fortunately the Awatea has completed her weekly summer running and will be in port until Thursday, when she is due to leave at 11 a.m. for Auckland.
