TAIHAPE

HEALTH INSPECTOR'S REPORT

The following are extracts from the annual report of the Health Inspector (Mr. W. H. Roy) which was presented at Friday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council: —

Water Supply and Swimming Bathe. —The headworks, reservoir and catchment area have been visited and found satisfactory. One sample was taken and forwarded for chemical analysis, the report being as formerly satisfactory. A complaint relating lu the quality of the water was recently received. The matter was referred to the borough foreman, Mr. Scott, who advised that ne was awaiting an opportunity to clean out the settling chambers and reservoir. He has advised me that this work has since been done. Owing to the long dry summer and resultant increased attendance at the swimming baths, more attention has been given in the matter of visits of inspection. I maystate however, that whenever visitea I have found the baths to be maintained in excellent condition by the keeper, Mr. Hayes.

Motor Camp, Domains, and Reserves.—Excepting for the provision of lids on refuse bins, the motor camp has always been found in satisfactory condition. Lids have since been provided for bins. Prior to the annual show a visit of inspection was made to the domain conveniences and sanitary appliances being found in good order. A report drawing attention to the lack of sanitary conveniences at the Papaki Reserve was forwarded and I am pleased to know that your council proposed to provide the necessary conveniences before the next summer season at this popular picnic resort. The new Public Works Department camp near the motor camp site has been visited on several occasions and advice has been given relating to camp sanitation. Condition here have been very satisfactory. Refuse Collection, Flies, Rats, etc. — During the year a complete survey of the borough refuse service wa® carried out, it was found that the chief troubles were unsuitable or dilabidated refuse bins, and in many instances proper close fitting over all lids were not provided by householders. 107 written notices were served requiring householders to provide new bins and lids or new lids only. Sixteen verbal requisitions were also served. I am pleased to state that through this work a definite improvement in the class of refuse bin used has resulted.

Controlled Tipping of Refuse.—A survey of all sites which could be utilised for the controlled tipping oi refuse was made and a report on these forwarded. A detailed report on controlled tipping as applicable to the borough service was also forwarded, with my recommendation that this method of disposal of refuse be adopted. It should be realised that Inc present uncontrolled tip is an ideal breeding place for flies and owing to the long dry summer, the presence of flies in greater numbers has been noted. If controlled tipping was introduced the prevention of fly breeding would be effected at the tip. All work carried out under this heading may also be classed under the heading of control of fly breeding. There is no evidence of rat iniestation throughout the borough. RUGBY FOOTBALL. TOWN TEAM. The following team will represent Taihape town against Halcombe, at Halcombe, tolday: —G. Spooner, McDonald, Reeves, W. Thompson, K. Sisson, E. Sisson, J. Gregory, Berryman, Ross, McGonagle, Hall, Nicholsen, Anderson, J. Johnson, Dashwood, Jackson, B. O’Brien, B. Clinton. The bus leaves at 11.30 a.m. Players must bring stockings, shorts and boots. The union will supply jerseys.

PROFESSOR ALGIE’S VISIT. Attention is drawn to an advertisement in this issue regarding an address to be given at the Town Hall, Taihape, on Monday next, May 2, by Professor R. M. Algie, L.L.M., of Auckland. The professor is one of the most brilliant speakers in New Zealand to-day and nobody should miss hi* address on Monday. SCHOOL BALL. Spectacular and colourful folk dances wifi be presented at the Taihape School ball on Thursday next, May 5. This popular annual event is always awaited with pleasurable anticipation by young and old alike and this year’s function promises to be one of the best ever. All school children including country pupils are invited to attend.
