Wendy’s Letter-Box

• TOOTHBRUSH ELF” SHOWS A PARTIALITY FOR DELECTABLE MUSHROOMS Dear Wendy,—How are you and ail the Ites? I hope everyone is well. Yesterday I had a meal of mushrooms. Just as I am writing “Little Cinder Girl'’ and "Little Cloudmaid” are having a squabble. “Little Cinder Girl” is trying to tap but cannot. Wendy, I am in Standard 11. My teacher’s name is Miss McLean. My mother and father have gone away to Feilding for the day. Dear Wendy, did you get any Easter eggs at Easter? Next month is the school ball. I don't know what I am going as yet.— Yours faithfully, "TOOTHBRUSH ELF,” Wainui.

Thank you, dear, I am quite well and I hope you are also. I am pleased to hear you are progressing so well at school. I received a very nice Easter egg. Did you? I hope you will attend the school ball and spend a wonderful time—Wendy. “PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME A BLACK EYE,” SAYS “TOMTIT ITE’ Dear Wendy.—Here I am popping in like a bad penny. "Mr. X Junior” please do not give me a black eye with your scones, will you? Ha! Ha' “Terrified Horse,” are you terrified? “P.M.A." how is the two-year-old? “K.M.A.” what has happened to you these days? "P.M.A.” do you like faking off your gumboots to jump over a Hooded creek? It is too cold for the “Water-rat” io wrile now, or has the dog got him? Good-bye to all the Iles and you Wendy. From "TOMTITITE,” Pukeroa.

I am glad you have popped in, dear, to sec us again. I am sure “Mr. X Junior” will not blacken your eyewit h the result ot his cooking. That would never do, would it?—Wendy.

(Letters to be addressed “WENDY,”

c o “Chronicle” Office, Box 105, Wanganui.)

“JUST IMAGINE WHAT A FUNNY ITEM A ‘TERRIFIED HORSE’ COULD GIVE,” SAYS “KANGAROO JACK.’’ Dear Wendy.—l think it is time I stirred the curiosity of the Ites again, so I will hop in for a few minutes. I am sure I saw "1.M.A.” and "Terrifield Horse” at the pictures a fewnights ago. "Hairy Goat’ it’s time you had a shave, but you must eat more straw and grow a big goat first. How are the “Big Sisters” these days; "Cuddle's Chum,” and "Hairy Goat’s Brother,” are your initials R.T. ana J.T? Great excitement about the Ites’ dance, Wendy, and concert, I think it is. What fun! Just imagine what a funny item a "Terrified Horse” could give and a "Hairy Goat” and even 11 could give by biggest hop. Weii, j Wendy, I must hop off to bed. I will' let you know how the dance and concert goes off. Best love from "KANGAROO JACK,” Pukeroa. I am so pleased to have your letter | dear, after your absence. I wondered i what could have happened to you. Arc I you going to help with the great tunc-1 tion?—Wendy. “TE - WEHI - OTE - RANGI” GATHERS LUSCIOUS MUSHROOMS FOR BREAKFAST. Dear Wendy.—l hope you are stilt in good health since I last wrote to you. The’weather is bad now isn’t it? My father is painting the church at. Koroniti. One early morning I went to pick some mushrooms for breakfast. I gathered a billy full. I hope you get mushrooms for your breakfast. Well, Wendy, 1 must close.— Love from “TE-WEHI-OTE-RANGI,” Wanganui River. Yes dear, the weather has been very bad, indeed. However, we must expect such at this season of the year. What a mice lot of mushrooms you gathered. They are so nice for break-1 fast, aren’t they?—Wendy.

COME ON NOW, FIND OUT WHO I AM,” SAYS “PIKI-ARERO.”

Dear Wendy,—Here I am. Rat-a-tat-tat! May I come in and have a chat to the Ites? 1 have been away for a while on holiday but 1 have turned up again like a bad penny, but better late than never. Well, dear Wendy, I know quite a number of my co-Ites. I know "Cuddles” and "Cuddles’ Chum.” Remember the times we used to have together, “Cuddles’ Chum”? I often wish for a ramble with you. You, too, “Stella,” 1 know you. Also "Kelly the Great,” I have often seen you at the pictures and we two have had great fun together. Now then, "Mr. X Junior,” 1 know you and have often seen you out riding. I like that new horse of yours. The other horse I believe belong to your brother. I notice he has two new mounts and they are nice horses. Come on, "P.M.A.,” you should wake up. I have not heard you squeak for a while now. Well, "Unlucky Love,” you seem to have died out of the chapter. Come on now and find out who I am. The "Two Big Sisters,” I know you and have often seen you cycling along the road. Come on; have a wild guess at my identity. Now, “Hairy Goat,” do lend the "Mystery Boy” your cycle. He may like a trip to see "Cuddle’s Chum.” Come along, “The Great Red Dawn,” you have not put in an appearance for a long while. Has that old Witch got you firmly in her clutches or are you afraid of being ;!ound out? I think I know who you are ail the same. I also know “Aunty,” of Wendy town. Well, dear Wendy, I hope I have not taken too much of your valuable space with my letter, and that there is a little space left for our co-Ites. Before I close I would like to know if you have ever heard the graceful verse of "PikiArero.” Saw you in the gorges, saw you in the pines, Lady Piki-Arero swing on the vines. Truly we have seen her, on her snowy wing * Lovely Piki-Arero brought the merry spring. Lady of October, Piki-Arero! Cool and white and dey, with your starry train, Where have you been hiding, all the time of rain? All the dreary snow-time, all the winter through We have longed and waited for the spring and you, Lady of October, Piki-Arero.

This is a beautiful poem. Now. dear Wendy, I must wish all the Ites a hasty good-bye. With love.—From "PIKI-ARERO,” Hunterville.

I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your holiday, dear. Oh, so you know a number of our Ites. I wonder if "Unlucky Love” will be able 1o discover your identity? It is a great pity our "Aunty” left the Wendy town district, isn't it? Thanks ever so much for the verses of "Piki-Arero.”— Wendy.

“IT HAS BEEN RAINING FOR TWO DAYS,” SAYS “ROSE MARIE AN A.”

Dear Wendy.—Well, I think it is about time I had written, don't you? Did you spend on enjoyable time at Easter? I hope you did? It has been raining for two days. I have not seen "Beauty Spot’s” letters in the paper for a long time. "Moon Rose” has not written for a long time, has she? We will soon be having our May holidays. Well, I think I will close now. With best wishes. From "ROSE MARIE AN A,” Mataroa.

I am so happy to have your welcome letter, dear. Oh, dear, yes, but hasn’t the rain been dreadful? I thought it would never cease here. However, we have suffered no flood damage. It would be lovely to hear from "Beauty Spot” wouldn’t it?Wendy.

“HOPING FOR A HEARTY RESPONSE,” SAY “LAUGHING LIZZIE” AND THE VEILED PRINCESS” Dear Wendy,—Just a few lines in answer to "Cuddles’” letter. We think this concert an excellent idea and will be only too pleased to give what assistance we can, but please, "Cuddles,” don’t make us eat “Our Little Boy’s” scones for supper. Surely if our Ites can arrange a concert and make a success of it they deserve something a little more appetising than "0.L.8’5.” scones to eat afterwards? But maybe | they are as good as some of our lies seem to think. We’ll hope so anyway. Well, "Cuddles,” hoping for a hearty I response from our fellow-members to your praise-worthy suggestion, we’ll close now. With love to all and best wishes.—From "LAUGHING LIZZIE” and "THE VEILED PRINCESS," Hunterville. I am ever so pleased to know that you will give your support in connection with the proposed concert anC dance. - Wendy.

"MOTHER OF FOUR” TOO PLEASED TO ASSIST AT CONCERT AND DANCE

Dear Wendy.—Just a short note in response to "Cuddle's” appeal. Personally I think it an excellent idea and shall be only 100 pleased to help in any way possible. The "better-half’ and myself watched the lights in the sky last Saturday and thought them rather a wonderful sight especially when the lights seemed to meet and made one broad pathway, almost as though it were a lighted pathway to heaven. "Cuddle’s Chum” I see where your admirer enquires after a cold in your eye. I hope you didn’t get that through the "dreadful splashing” I gave you. Can boast I beat "Bell Tea” on the length of the baths swim, and am I thrilled? Visitors arriving, Wendy, so must leave. With love to all the Ites.—“MOTHER OF FOUR,” M.W.L., Hunterville. I am so pleased to know you arc going to help with "Cuddle's” idea of holding a concert and dance. Yes, the lights were very wonderful indeed. I watched it closely for as long as it appeared. Oh, bravoo! I am as proud of your accomplishment a.-:] yourself.—Wendy. “WE’VE HAD NOTHING BUT I RAIN,” SAYS "GAY MOLLY.” Dear Wendy.—JVell, here I am' again after a few week’s absence. 1 do not like writing much, but it’s something to do. I have not made any discoveries yet. Isn’t the weather awful? We-ve had nothing but rain for nearly two weeks. Did you read about the floods in the Hawke’s Bay? I have a younger sister, who is eight years of age, she wanted to become a member, too, but. she cannot write properly yet. We have a dog and cal. The dog's name is Nip and the cat's is Teeny. I walk about the house now and once I walked to town, but it was a bit too much for me. I do a 10l of drawing but I'm not very good al 1 it. Well, I’ll close now as news is short. Lots ot love —From "GAY MOLLY,” Bulls.

I am so pleased to receive your letter, dear. I began to wonder if you were in the grips of old Mr. Flu Germ. The floods were terrible indeed. Perhaps your little sister wili soon be able to join our ranks. Drawing is a lovely pastime.—Wendy.

“I HAVE NOT FAILED YET AT SCHOOL,” SAYS “MOTHER’S HELPER.” Dear Wendy.—Knock! Knock! May I come in as it is raining so hard outside? At the end of this term we are going to have a new headmaster, as Mr. Costello is leaving and Mr. Blackwell is taking his place. "Sweet. Sultan,” and "Early Bird the Third.” might be going to Hastings for the holidays. Daddy is going to take them if they do go. My little cousin who is a year and six months old is very fond of my doll, which I received last year. I am in Standard 3 this year. I have not failed yet at school. 'Excuse writing please Wendy, as this is just scribble. There are about 82 children going to Tokoroa School. There is only one Maori girl who is in the primers. We have a new school bus in which 34 children can travel. On March 25 Tokoroa School went to Matamata baths in order that the swimmers may gain their certificates. "Sweet Sultan” gained hers. Well, news is scarce. Goodbye.—From "MOTHER’S HELPER,” Putaruru. 1 Yes, dear, do pop in here by our cosy fire. How dreadful the weather is to be sure. However, we may now expect the like for some time to come. I hope "S.S.” and “E.8.T.” will enjoy their holidays. I am pleased to hear of your success with your studies.— Wendy.
