S.P.C.A Junior League

Proposed Opening Of Clinic

We hope on May 7 to open a clinic where junior members or those intending to become members may bring their pets for treatment and advice. It will be held at Mr. Hansen’s, the chemist, back entrance in St. Hill Street, on Saturday morning from 10 a>m. to 12, where Mr. Dyer the BJ’.C.A. Inspector, will be in attendance. Now this is a very big step u« the progress of the Junior League and it is up to each of you to take full advantage of this privilege. If your pet requires treatment or advice, patronise this clinic, or if you see anyone else’s pet ill, tell them about it and get them Io go to the clinic. There will be no charge except if any medicines or special material is used. This is as tar as we know the only clinic of its kind in New Zealand, so go ahead Junior League and support the S.P.C.A. Junior League Clinic.

During the holidays I had a letter from the S.P.C.A. at Shanghai, enclosing their magazine. In spite of all the fighting in this Chinese city, the workers of the S.P.C.A. have been carrying on; tending the wounded animals and destroying numbers of pets made homeless that would otherwise have starved to death. In some cases, they have gone to houses and sent the pets there on to their owners who were away when the trouble started and are unable to return. The work in many cases is being done by volunteers, with no hope of reward and very often rescue work is performed under most dangerous conditions. I think we should feel very

proud that we are in touch with a branch of tne S.P.C.A. doing such splendid work, and realise how small our own efforts are to fulfil the ideals

of our league. At the Public Library you will find the magazine sent by the Shanghai S.P.C.A. and also sent specially to you by the Junior League in London. Please go and lead them. They arc full of interest and have delightful pictures of buds and animals. A TIMELY HINT Cats and dogs suffered an epidemic of fleas on account of the hot dry weather. But now it is definitely cooler, but still on a warm sunny give your pets—cats as well as dogsa good warm bath, using a little disinfectant and a good insect destroying dog soap. Dry your pets thoroughly and see that all their bedding is burnt and boxes or baskets thoroughly scrubbed and dried in the sun. Fleas cause much distress to animals and make them quite bad tempered and often lead to skin troubles. A member the other day reported seeing a cat rush across tne road trailing something white behind it. This proved to be a long piece of white tape. It was so tightly wound round the cat’s tail that it took several minutes before it could be taken off. There is still cruelty, then, in Wanganui, not ignorance or thoughtlessness, but plain deliberate cruelty. In school and out of it, children and grown ups too, don't Jet this go on Do all you can to encourage kindness i and consideration.
