Meteorological Office, Wellington, Friday, April 29, 3 p.m

General Situation.—A rather deep secondary depression was centred near Nelson this afternoon, while pressure is high over Eastern Australia and the northern Tasman.

Forecast.—Winds: Moderate to fresh south-westerly north of Kawhia and Tauranga and moderate to strong south-westerly to south-easterly south of Westport and Kaikoura, elsewhere strong northerlies at first but backing by to-morrow morning to southerly or south-easterly. Seas (New Zealand waters): Moderate in coastal waters on parts of the east coast but rising to-morrow; elsewhere mainly rather rough to rough. Eastern Tasman Sea: Fresh to strong south-westerly winds and rough seas. Weather: Changeable in the north with scattered showers; cloudy to overcast from Taranaki and Hawke's Bay southwards with further rain and some heavy falls in the central areas and in parts of Canterbury. Conditions improving to-morrow in western districts. Temperatures becoming cooler. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 40 minutes. Rainfall, .73 inches. Temperature: Maximum, 69deg. Fahr.; minimum, 55deg. Fahr. Time of sunset to-day, 5.01 p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow, 6.37 a.m.
