PASSION FRUIT

DANNEVIRKE CUP WINNER RACING AT WOODVILLE INTERESTING CONTESTS (Special Reporter). In spite of the uncertain weather outlook yesterday, there w|:s a very satisfactory and representative gathering of racegoers at the opening day of the Dannevirke Racing Club s annual meeting, held on the Woodville course. The sky was overcast but no rain fell, and the wind which sprang up and continued after nightfall should dry the course up considerably for the second day’s racing today. The track, soft at the commencement of the day's activities, improved during the afternoon. The totalisator handled £7199 10s, compared with £9372 on the corresponding day last year. Interesting racing was provided throughout, though most of the finishes provided decisive winning margins. The principal event, the Dannevirke Cup, went to Passion Fruit, owned and trained at Dannevirke. Conveyer, who was second, shaped like an early improver, and in third place behind the dividend-payers was the hot favourite, Arctic King, who was conceding up to 301 b. to the remainder of the field.

Taking charge soon after they turned into the back stretch, Iddo had the hurdle race won and he was easing up at the finish, half a dozen lengths in front of Hirangi, who was three lengths in front of Taumau. The field had not gone far before Master Hector's girth broke.

Reay Bridge, whose name has been changed from Fitzjames, was favourite for the maiden race and he did not give his backers any cause for worry. He was in a handy position to the straight, where he drew out for a comfortable victory from Brilliant Acre, who was a couple of lengths in front of Royal Tinge. . Passion Fruit’s Cup. Arctic King carried over a third of the investments in the Cup race but he was beaten into third place, the winner being the Dannevirke owned and trained Passion Fruit, who cleared out in the straight and won by well over two lengths from Conveyer.

The order was much the same throughout and the leaders to the straight were Sergia, Mister Quex and Conveyer (outer) almost in line, clear of Davistock and Passion Fruit. Arctic King moved up at the halfmile and he followed Conveyer and Sergia into the home stretch, where Passion Fruit quickly ran to the front to win very decisively from Conveyer, who beat the favourite by a length. Mister Quex was fourth, followed by Sergia. Earl Colossus was fifth in the betting order for the Akitio Handicap but after being in a handy position at the home turn he went through to score attractively a couple of lengths in front of the favourite, Lady Montana. Earl Colossus headed Bias at the distance and although Lady Montana came with a late run he won easily by two lengths. An exciting finish was provided in the Tahoraite Handicap, the topweight, Mea Mea, just beating the favourite. Bold Step, with the second favourite, Okawa, in third place.

Puroto, half-sister to Martara, proved that here Feilding win was no fluke when she led the Oringi Hack Handicap field home after taking the lead with half a mile to cover. There was a good tussle for second diviqrpd. Naughty Marietta, the favourite, just getting the verdict by a head over Lord Quick, and there was a gap to Warehi and Inheritance.
