ARTHUR HENDERSON

INTERESTING BIOGRAPHY NEW BOOKS AT LIBRARY A page from British history is furnished in “Arthur Henderson,” a biography by that statesman's wife and now added to the list of books on the shelves at the Wanganui Public Library. It was largely by Arthur Henderson’s efforts that trade unions assumed real power in national life. Henderson was a trade unionist for over fifty years, was secretary of the Labour Party for 23 years, a member of the House of Commons from 1903 to 1935, with only short interludes, and was also a local preacher for over half a century. This is a story of a great man. known to thousands as “Uncle Arthur,” and beloved by millions. With Arthur Henderson as Foreign Secretary and, later, at the Disarmament Conference, the League of Nations made its most valiant bid for peace in our time. Several other interesting books have been added at the library, the full list for the week being as follow: Fiction.—“ Action at Aquila” (Hervey Allen); “The Dragon's Tail” (Anne Duffield); “Youth in the Spotlight” (Guy Fletcher); “Lord Samarkand” (H. A. Vachell); “Lucy and Amades” (Esther Meynell). Non-fiction. “Arthur Henderson” (Mary A. Hamilton); “The Ayes Have It” (A. P. Herbert).
