Mr L. T. Jones, a member of the Waitotara County Council, who has been in the Wanganui Hospital foi threc weeks, is convalescent.
The Rev. John Flynn, superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission, and Mrs. Flynn will be visitors to Wanganui to-day. This afternoon Mrs. Flynn will address a public meeting of women at St. Paul’s Hall, and in the evening the Rev. John Flynn will speak on the work of the mission.
Mr. F. Johnston, chairman of directors of the Wangaehu Dairy Company, intends to stand for the Otakapo riding in the Rangitikei County at the election to be held on May 11. The riding is at present represented on the council by Mr Alex Stuart, who has announced that he is retiring. Mi Johnston has a good deal of experience in the local body work, and haj been a director of the Dairy company for the last 16 years.
Mr J. Spence, who has been Stratford County engineer for 19 years, was the recipient of presentations from the council staff recently prior to his retirement to undertake a private survey and civil engineering practice. On behalf of the staff of five the country clerk, Mr C. J. L. Campbell, presented Mr Spence with a razor outfit, a set of pipes, and an ir.scribe.l tobacco pouch, expressing regret at the severance of happy associations.
Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. J. J. McDonald, a former Mayoress, and Mr. J. J. Foley, a council employee for many years, were passed at last night’s special meeting of the Marton Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr. F. W. Purnell), said that during the late Mr. J. J. McDonald’s mayoralty he had taken a leading part in the construction of the borough gas works and the purchase of Marton Park. In all civil affairs, the late Mrs. McDonald had carried out her duties faithfully as Mayoress.
