RACES AT WAVERLEY

STEEPLECHASE FIELD ( ARD FOR SATURDAY’. Keen interest is being displayed by followers of form in the autumn meeting of the Waverley Racing Club, to be held on Saturday, and the prospects are that there will be a large attendance of Wanganui racegoers at the fixture, for it leads up to the more important winter fixtures of the Egmont and Wanganui clubs, less than a month later. The first race at Waverley is set down for 11.45 a.m., and the intervals between races are 40 minutes. The totalisator will be operated on the single-pool system, with dividends on first and second horses in the proportions of 75 and 25 per cent, respectively where there are five or more starters. It is interesting to note also that successful investors may collect their dividends on first and second horses at the same windows. One of the features of the day’s programme of eight events will be the Waverley Steeplechase, for which a field of ten is carded. One of the contestants in which much interest will be displayed is Forest Glow, who ran his stablemate. Riotous, to a head in the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday. The Waverley-owned Don Erma and a Wanganui Steeplechase winner in Count Willonyx will also have friends, and lhe promising Artful Dodger should also be in demand. Six of the field are on the minimum, but. that should not detract from the interest in the race. A good field is engaged in the Patea County Cup, and ‘here are no fewer than fourteen in the Ngutuwera Hack Cup. for which a trophy has been provided. On Hawera Tracks. Considering the proximity of lhe Waverley meeting there was little fast work at Hawera on Tuesday morning. The Feilding candidates have returned and there should be more activity later in the week, states the Hawera Star. Student Prince (G. Sexton) went once round. He was allowed to stride along over the last three furlongs, recording 40s for the distance. The abscess which caused him to be eased up over Easter has broken and he may fulfil his Waverley engagements. Dancing Lady was responsible for a sound effort when covering five furlongs in 1.4 L She has freshened and should run well on Saturday. Fiddledine was too smart for Lucrece over four furlongs run in 53is The former has grown into a very shapely filly and the patient policy adopted by her connections should be well rewarded next seasun. Fafner and Gold Glare were associated over four furlongs covered in 51Bs. Fafner went pleasingly, finishing clear of his companion, and should be prominent on Saturday. Trilitha began better than Brioni and maintained her advantage to come home ahead of her companion over four furlongs traversed in 53is. Neither was impressive. Winsome Lu cantered once round and then sprinted two furlongs in 265. She appeared to appreciate the easier going.
