COOGAN’S EARNINGS
ACTION FOR RECOVERY. MOTHER GIVES EVIDENCE. Received April 19, 8.30 p.m. HOLLYWOOD, April 19. Mrs. Bernstein, at the deposition hearing in connection with Jackie Coogan’s suit for the recovery of his earnings, testified that not a penny of the fortune lawfully belonged to Jackie. “I have done my best for him,” she said. “I have tried to make a man of him but have not succeeded very well.” Asked if she had ever promised her son or if she intended to create a trust fund for him, Mrs. Bernstein replied: ‘ Absolutely no.” “Does all Jackie’s money belong to you?” witness was asked. “I believe that is the law,” uhe replied. As the lawyer persisted with his questioning, Mrs. Bernstein buried her head in her arms and wept. The hearing was adjourned. It was reported recently that the Court had issued an order authorising the sheriff to enter the home of Mrs. Bernstein, mother of the film actor Jackie Coogan, and subpoena her to give a deposition in connection with Coogan’s suit. The servers > f the subpoena were unable to gain entrance to the house, a maid saying that her mistress was at Palm Springs. The servers, however, said they saw the Bernsteins in the house.
