HARRIERS’ CLUB The following officers have been . elected in connection with the formation of the Taihape Harriers’ Club: Patron, Mr H. A. Belk; president, Mr . H. Johnston; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Galbraith, J. Quirk, H. I. Bond. J. Bridson, R. Kiely, R. H. Lawson, E. D. Duncan, R. J. Gibbs, D. Neagle Dr. H. M. Hay, Mrs L. Lelievre; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. Treadwell; auditor, Mr R. D. Mayson; committee, Messrs H. Boyes, R. Spence, J. Nicholson, J. Stead; timekeeper, Mr H. D. Bond; delegate, Mr S. Hur ley (Marton). It was decided that the colours of the club should comprise a black singlet with gold lettering, black pants with gold trimming. The matter of electing a club captain, handicapper and coach was held over till the commencement of the season. All intending members are requested to communicate with the secretary. MATAROA DOG TRIALS The 16th annual trials conducted by the Mataroa Sheep Dog Trial Club will open on Mr W. Coogan's property at Mataroa to-day (Wednesday), and will be continued to-mor-row and Friday. Good entries have been received for all events and indications point to a most successful meeting. The first event to be decided is the long head, to be followed by the short head and yard. The last event is the huntaway, which starts on Friday. The fixture attracts "doggie” men from far and near, and competition is keen. The executive committee are working hard to ensure the success ol the trials. The chief executive officers are as follow: President, Mr J. McHardy; secretaries, Messrs J. Williams and S. Steedman; treasurer, Mr S. Steedman; executive committee, Messrs J. Gresson, J. Thorpe, C. Cleaver, C. McCarthy, L. and D. Coogan, J. Boon, F. Ward, A. Wilson, D. Muir, i W. Cleaver; ground marshals, Messrs j McCarthy (chief), Boon, L. Coogan, | W. Cleaver; shep stewards, Messrs C. Cleaver (chief), D. and J. Coogan, J.| Thorpe; judge’s clerk and timekeepers, Messrs D. McCarthy, Gresson, Ward, Bremner. The catering is in the hands of the ladies of the club. POLO SPORTS The Taihape Polo Club will hold their annual gymkhana on Mr W. L. Britton’s property at Pungataua tomorrow (Thursday). An interesting programme of events has been arranged for the occasion, including a polo match betwen A and B teams, ladies’ and gents' polo ball races and bending competitions, wheelbarrow race, ladies’ bracelet and Moawhango plate events, and the Polo Cup. Those who attended the sports last
year retain pleasant memories of a most enjoyable day’s outing, and arc looking forward to to-morrow's gymkhana with eager anticipation. The Taihape Polo Club has enjoyeu a successful season, fostering by every means in its power one of the most fascinating of all sports, and deserves a large measure of public support. Given line weather a large attendance is anticipated at to-morrow’s gathering, which will doubtless provide patrons with excitement and thrills galore. GENERAL NEU’S Taihape won the three-men consolation event at the annual demonstration of the United District Eire Brigades’ Association, which was held at Dannevirke. Featherston was second and Eketahuna third. The Taihape team consisted of G. Mayor, D. George, J. Johnson. I Deputy-superintendent H. Collings presided over the annual conference of the U.D.F.8.A., while Foremansecretary Adair was also present as a delegate. J. P. Mortland played well at the North Island golf championships at Palmerston North at Easter, defeating in turn E. R. Chapman (Manawatu), 3 and 1, G. Faris (Tapuata), 5 and 4, and M. Moore (Wellington), 2 and 1. Mortland was beaten by J. P. Hornabrook in the semi-finals, 3 and 2. The following Taihape rinks competed in a tourney at Wanganui at. Easter:—Fleming, Ryan, Marsh, J Williams; Moreland, J. Williams. Horne, Gladstone. Each rink scored a win, but the tourney had to beabandoned owing to rain. LOCAL ORCHESTRAS A speaker at the biennial meeting of householders last Wednesday pointed out, when the matter of engaging of a local orchestra for the school ball was under discussion, that the Taihape orchestras were not bound by any award, as the members of these orchestras were not professional musicians. The speaker in question I stated that he had been in touch with j the inspector of awards and was inI formed that the musicians’ award applied only to those who made their living by this means. He had also seen a copy of the award and he was quite satisfied that it referred to professional musicians only.
