OHAKEA AERODROME
DEVEI,OI*MENT PROGRESSING ; (From Our Own Correspondent) SANDON, April 16. Increasing activity is evident to passers by at the new defence aerodrome now in the course of construction at Ohakea. The contractors for the hangar construction are progressing at top speed, and it is anticipated to have these complete in 12 to 13 months time. When completed these two twin hangars will be the largest in the southern hemisphere, each having a ground area of 220 ft. in width and 190 ft. in depth, with a door opening 25 feet high, closed by sliding doors so that together they will accommodate a considerable number of modern bombing machines of wide wing spread. The roof will be of unusual design, being adopted to meet the difficulty at the present time in obtaining heavy structural steel. In place of one or other of the forms of standard construction adopted in the Royal Air Force in Great Britain, the roof span members will be ten great arches of
heinforced concrete, the feet of which will sweep down far outside the walli proper. A considerable number ol men are now on the job, and modern machinery equipment is engaged in , moving earth, etc.
