NORTH ISLAND AMATEUR TITLE SMITH BEATS CHAMPION I Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., April 19. In the final of the North Island amateur golf championship P. G. F. Smith (Akarana Club) defeated J. Hornabrook (Manawatu), open champion of New Zealand, 3 and 2. Hornabrook found most of his troubles on the green, failing in comparatively short-distance putting. A the end of the morning round Smith was two up. Fortunes fluctuated, but Hornabrook never led, and Smith was one up at the third. He increased his lead to two at the sixth where Hornabrook struck three bunkers. At the eleventh the open champion had made up the leeway on Smith’s misjudged second shot. The Aucklander, however, regained his lead of two up by the 14th. He loat one at the 16th, but Hornabrook missed a three-foot putt at the 18th The open champion was troubled by putting. The afternoon round saw Hornabrook take the first two holes to bring the game square, but Smith again took the lead at the fourth. The next three holes were halved, but Smith was two up at the eighth when Hornabrook missed a 3-foot putt. Smith then ran down an eight-footer at the ninth and led 3 up.

Hornabrook rertrieved his reputation on the gren when he sank a twenty-footer to halve the tenth. The next two were halved. Both players struck trouble at the 13th, which was halved, though Smith was lucky to get out so easily. He won the 14th, where Hornabrook was bunkered, taking two to get out. Smith was now dormy four but he crashed at the 15th, where he was bunkered, taking tow to get out. Hornabrook, three down with three to play, made an effort to survive, but a twenty-footer was too much and the hole was halved, leaving Smith 3 up and 2 to play.

The Dobson Cup is the virtual amateur match play championship of Canterbury.
