KNEE FOR LEGLESS MAN
INVENTION BY FEILDING OLD BOY. (Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, April 19. Mr. Jack Stewart, a son of Mr. Harold Stewart, of Folding, has invented an artificial knee for which it is claimed that limbless men throughout New Zealand will be able to walk in comparative comfort and freedom. About three years ago Mr. Stewart lost a leg through an accident while motor-cycle racing, and he set his mechanical ability to work to produce an artificial limb for his own use. His device is now being tested by a Government expert with a view to having it for the use of limbless soldiers. Mr. Stewart’s invention requires no shoulder straps, it gives a natural controlled walk without tiring, and eliminates the necessity for continual adjustment. The knee joint has been designed to give comfort and ease and a natural movement, and thus Increase the usefulness and happiness of those who have suffered the loss of a limb. It is expected that the device will be accepted for use by returned soldiers, and for others who need it.
