SHEEP-DOG TRIALS

WAVERLEY-VVAITOTARA CLUB A very high standard of work was witnessed on Monday and Tuesday at the Waverley-Waitotara Sheep-dog Trial Club’s twenty-first annual gathering which was held on Mr. Wilfred C. Simmon's property at Kohl. On the first day the maiden heading event, in which there were 19 competitors, and the long head, in which there were 24 competitors, were completed and five competitors were run off in the short head and yard. . A notable point was the uniform standard of the work, most of the dogs in both events completing the dittlcult course. The sheep were released on the top of a hill with steep spurs on either side and the dogs had to check a tendency of the sheep to head to the left. In the maiden event the sheep had to be driven through two sets of hurdles, and held at the peg, while in the long head they had to be driven twice round the ring. The work in the maiden event was good, no fewer than 12 of the 19 competitors completing. The winner was Glen, owned by Mr. F. Deacon, Warea, who scored a point more than the runner-up, a locally-owned dog. The long head was won by R. O. White. Maxwell, with Don, who dropped only 21 points. Mr. J. H. Baker was second, and Mr. W. V. Mclntyre, third. In the huntaway event there were 30 entries which were concluded on the second day. There was very good work witnessed in this class the winner being Sam, owned by Les. Munro, who scored half a point more than the runner-up, Collin’s Boy.

The yarding event was won by Tess, owned by R. Guthrie, Cruachan, owned by W. V. Mclntyre was second, and Highland King owned by Fraser Smith, third. The judge was Mr. T.
