SCHOOL ELECTIONS

HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETINGS THE NEW COMMITTEES Statutory meetings of householders were held on Wednesday to elect school committees lor the ensuing two years. Mr S. W. Morrison (chairman), Mr A. Ward (hon. secretary), Messrs A. Poppe, R. Coleman, and E. B.- Gordon. The two retiring members, Mr J. C. Hammond and Mr H. Dexter, both expressed their willingness ti» continue to support any activities that the committee might undertake for the benefit of the school. For their past services, they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Bulls Only nine householders attended and since insufficient candidates were offering, the committee was not finally appointed. Hunterville The following were elected to the committee at Hunterville: Mr D. D. Simpson (chairman), Rev. Mr Smaill (secretary), Messrs F. F. Pauli, J. Klue, C. F. McManaway, A. H. Rhodes, S. Gibbs, D. J. Coleman, and Canton. Messrs Dukeson and R. M. S. Jones did not seek re-election. Parevvanui Mr J. Montgomery (chairman), W. Hart (hon. secretary), Messrs O. Reid, A. Young and A. Tattle were elected at Parewanui. Upper Tutaenui Mr C. H. Gower (chairman), Mr C. Stafford (hon. secretary), Messrs G. Thomson. Marshall and Woods were elected at Upper Tutaenui. South M .<kiri Messrs J. Kinloch, Christie, S. Bertram, G. Franke, and Stokes. The appointment of f.iairman was held over. Mount View Mr J. Nitschke (chairman), Mr L. Coleman (hon. secretary), Messrs Death, Voss and Davies. Greatford Messrs G. Lewis (chairman), J. Cowie (secretary and treasurer), A. G. Thoms, C. G. Thoms, and N. A. Thoms. Turakina Messrs L. Wright (chairman), R. J. Glasgow (secretary), H. Bryant, 11. Kitney, and M. McPike. Ohingaiti The householders’ meeting for Ihe election of a school committee for the ensuing two years, resulted in a record attendance of about forty householders. The chairman of the outgoing committee (Mr R. A. Gower) gave a resume of his committee’s work during the past two years ana the report and balance-sheet was presented. After some discussion the balance-sheet was adopted. Mr J. B. McKnight was voted to the chair and

Mr McGuckin secretary. The outgoing committee refused nomination “en bloc,” but there was no dearth of nominees for no fewer than seven accepted nomination, namely: Mr H. M. McGuckin, Mr J. B. McKnight, Mr O. Foote, Mr H. Pritchard, Mr McCullough, Mr F. Mclntyre, Mr M. Christensen. The resultant poll found the five new members for the next two years to be: Messrs H. M. McGuckin, J. B. McKnight, O. Foote, McCullough, F. Mclntyre. At a meeting of the new committee, Mr J. B. McKnight. was appointed chairman and Mr H. McGuckin secretary. Westmere The meeting at Westmere drew a large attendance and keen interest was taken in the proceedings. The report of the dental clinic, which was given by the acting-secretary (Mr L. J. Tank) was very satisfactory. The school committee's report, read by the chairman (Mr C. D. Corliss) showed a year of’ great progress. A social hall had been erected through the generosity of the friends of the school and this is filling a long-felt want, and owing to the increase in scholars was being used as a classroom. A cinematograph had been purchased by public subscription and this has proved very helpful in teaching geography. Films of Empire countries are provided free by their respective representatives. The grounds had been levelled and extensive improvments to them are being undertaken. Mention was made ot the help afforded and in the teaching of swimming by the free use of the St. John’s Hill Convent baths. Very hearty votes of thanks were accorded the retiring committee, the teaching staff, and the social committee. Th* treasurer’s report, read by Mr A. E. Thompson, showed credit balances in both the general and social accounts. There is still a debt owing on the hall and the purchase of the cinematograph. ents at Tawhero School. The following committee was el'ected: Chairman, Mr W. Nicholls; secretary, Mr W. J. Healey; committee, Messrs L. Denman, R. Smith, W. Caldwell, Mrs W. Caldwell and Mr J. Hammond. Special reference of votes of thanks were passed to Mr T. Russell, Mr G. Clark, and Mr J. Healey, who did not seek re-election. All had served on the committee for the past ten years and have had much to do with the improvements that have taken place. TAIHAPE DISTRICT HIGH The chairman of the Taihape District High School Committee (Mr E. Loader) presided over a satisfactory attendance at the biennial meeting of householders held at the school on Wednesday evening for the purpose of electing a school committee for the ensuing term of two years. Chairman’s Report The chairman's report read as follow: “I wish to congratulate Mr J. C. Whibley, our headmaster, and all the members of his staff for their very excellent work, as shown by the results of previous examinations held, also upon the tone of the school which has been maintained al a very high standard. The general appearance of school children in their school uniforms reflects great credit on their parents. I also wish to thank Mr C. Forbes, our school caretaker, for the very able manner in which he has carried out his duties. “Mr Whibley has kindly acted as secretary pro tern, in place of Mr A. Fuller, our late secretary, who will be missed very much in sdhool affairs. I feel that in leaving the school committee I have been somewhat lax in not bringing the question of an assembly hall to finality. I offer it as a suggestion to the incoming committee that they take up the matter in connection with the centenary celebrations of the Wellington province to raise a fund in Taihape and district. All the old pupils who have attended the school could be asked to give a donation and a list could also be opened amongst the present pupils and friends of the school. I feel quite sure that a substantial sum could be raised and that the Government would subsidise the amount so collected.

“In conclusion I wish the Taihape District High School every success in the future.” The acting-secretary read the bal-ance-sheet, which disclosed a satisfactory financial position. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Election of Committee The following school committee was elected: Messrs W. Berridge, C. F. Dunn, J. A. Graham, W. Jurgens, J. A. Mort land, G. A. Sherson, W. L. Paterson, Dr. Hay, Rev. E. T. King. At a subsequent meeting of the newly-elected committee, Rev. Mr King was elected chairman and Mr J. C. Whibley secretary. Mr J. A. Graham was appointed treasurer. The secretary was authorised to engage at. assistant. Education Amendment Bill Mr Whibley briefly outlined the provisions of the Education Amendment Bill and explained that the power of the committee would certainly not be lessened. The Bill would not make much difference to the Taihape School. The most important feature of the Bill was the proposal that the whole administration of education for a particular district be placed under one board. At present there were three separate boards in Wanganui governing three different schools. The Wanganui Education Board’s boundaries would not be altered. High Schools On the motion of the chairman it was decided that the proper authorities be approached with a view to having the secondary departments ot district high schools placed on the same footing as high schools. The headmaster pointed out the advantages which a high school proper had over a secondary department of a district high school, and the meeting was firmly of the opinion that both should be on the same footing. Appreciation The meeting placed on record its high appreciation of the services rendered by Mr A. Fuller as secretary, and Mr E. Loader as chairman of the school committee. Rev. E. T. King remarked that. Mr Loader had been on the committee for the 25 years during which time he Mad done a great deal for the school, and the cause of education generally. Dr. Hay endorsed the remarks of Mr King. In responding, Mr Loader said that he had always taken a great interest in school affairs and had given of his best. A suggestion I hat Mr Loader he presented with an illuminated address in recognition of his services, met with the approval of the meeting. Mr Whibley pointed out that lhe present Minister of Education (Hon. P. Fraser) had done a great deal for education since he assumed office, and the speaker suggested that the Minister should be sent a letter of thanks and appreciation from the householders. Mr Loader concurred and moved a motion along the lines suggested. Mr Sherson seconded the motion, which was carried by acclamation. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the work of the headmaster and staff. Mr Whibley responded on behalf of the staff. Mr Loader thanked the parents for their assistance to the school and wished the school every success in the future.
