FEILDING CUP

WOTAN IN LAST STRIDE AUREUS SCORES IN SPRINT RACING marred by rain Reporter.) Rain on Saturday marred the open-. ing day of the Fending Jockey Club s autumn meeting, for in .pite of the large attendance the totalisator showed a drop of £9077 10s from last year s £27,250 10s to £18,173. Under the weather conditions, showers being experienced for the great portion of the afternoon, this result must be considered satisfactory. Scratchings late in the afternoon reduced the fields somewhat, and there were only foui starters in the concluding race. The track was very heavy. Wotan won the Feilding Cup m a thrilling finish, getting up in tne last stride to secure the judge s verdict by a nose from Big Pook, many of tne spectators on a deceptive angle having the impression that Big Dock had lasted long enough. This was Wotan s first win since he scored his sensational Melbourne Cup victory in November,- 1936. Grateful ran a good race for third, just ahead of Lady Kyra and Catalogue, these five being bunched. In the heavy going Oratory had little chance and finished at the rear of the held. Aureus won the open sprint, the Mangaone Handicap, and Old Surrey the Halcombe Handicap. The hack distance event was won by Matara s sister, Puroto. a maiden performei, and Requiem, from Te Awamutu, won the hack sprint. As the juveniles were going out to do their preliminaries for the Taonui Nursery Handicap, Chere Arnie bolted, and her rider was unable to pull her up till she had covered a circuit. Under the circumstances the stewards permitted her to be withdrawn and any investments made on her were refunded. Charade Well Ridden. Charade, not quite so well backed as Love but better handled than Iddo, beat these two in the Kawa Kawa Hurdles. Charade had run to the front at the second hurdle and led past the stands, four lengths ahead of Taumau, Aurora’s Love and Iddo, Lustral losing his rider. Running down the back £aumau again joined Charade and the\ were clear ot Aurora’s Love and Iddo. The last-named moved up to join the leaders at the last fence, out Cnarade, who did not cover any extra ground, got hom& by a good half-lengtn from iddo. Five lengths back was Aurora’s Love, just in front of Taumau. Maiden Stakes to Huntino. Golden Pam carried half as much again as Huntino in the Maiden Stakes, but Huntino won nicely. Several of the held dwelt at the barrier rise, but Huntino soon showed out from Golden Pam, Tipsy Miss ana Valroy. Huntino was the only one of the leaders to hold on in the run home, and the Hunting Song gelding won by a length ana a-hait from Colincamps, who got up to beat Merry Thought by a head for second place. Rolling Home came from well back for fourth place, and Golden Pam. Valroy and Tipsy Miss were next. Wotan Wins the Cup. Grateful and Big Dook were favourites for the Feilding Cup, but Wotan sprang a mild surprise to win in the last stride. Oratory and Lady Kyra led Grateful, Big Dook, Catalogue and Siegmund out of the straignt. Along the back Lady Kyra had a little the better of Oratory, with Big Dook, Grateful and Catalogue well clear 01 Wotan and Tahurangi. Lady Kyi a and Big Dook led across the top, Big Dook being actually hrst imo the straight, but the leaders bunched ai the distance, and Wotan came with u great run to win in the last stride by a nose from Big Dook, with Gratelui half a length away. Lady Kyra was a close fourth, with Catalogue and Siegmund next and Oratory and Tahujangi beaten off. Promising Juvenile Wins. The Taonui Nursery winner tuineu up in the Bronze Eagle—Priscilia \erne colt Dark Eagle, who returned a good price. Ecstatic, Mmga, Old Bill and Verey Lights were early prominent, and on the home turn Ecstatic (on the rails), Verey Lights, Miwga and Uld Biil were almost in line, with Dark Eagle making a forward move. A furlong from home Minga took the lead, out Dark Eagle iinisned better to win by three-quarters of a length. Minga was a head in front of Ecstatic, with drachma another head away. Aureus Finishes from Back. Aureus, outsider of the five starters in the Mangaone Handicap, sprang a surprise. When the barrier went up Aureus dwelt, Mittie, Florence Mills and Notium being the early leaders. Notium was actually hrst into the straight, but Aureus came with a great run from the rear to win by three-quar-ters of a length from Notium. Great Hope was a similar distance back, ana Florence Mills, who was galloped on, was next. Puroto First at Last. Warehi, Conveyer and Donegal were favoured in the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, but the winner turned up in Puroto. Warehi, Puroto and Scarf Dance led out of the straight, and with six furlongs to go Wareni and Puroto were clear uf Scarf Dance, Donegal, Conveyer and Princess Isabel. Tnen Donegal ran through to the from, and he and Puroto led Conveyer and Warehi into the straight. Donegal was done with at the distance and then Scarf Dance made an effort, but Puroto won by a neck from Conveyer. Two lengths back was Scarf Dance, just ahead of Donegal. Skyfuil whistle Pinkie and Princess Isabel were next. Easy for Requiem. Requiem was favourite in a remarkably even betting race on the

Ongo Hack Handicap and scored a runaway win. Amoroso jumped out with Copycat. Jazz Boy and Requiem, and when they had settled down Requiem was just behind Amoroso, with Copycat. Jazz Boy and Noisy Night next, Pekoe being tailed off. There was lithe change crossing the top and entering the straight, but Requiem cieared out from the rest and won by live lengths. Malibu got up to beat Noisy Night for second place by a head, and Golden Orchid was only a head awaj, clear of Copycat, Jazz Boy and Amoroso. Four-horse Field. In a field of four for the concluding event Old Surrey was made favourite and duly won. Clessamor led out from Matoru and Old Surrey, but by the time they had covered naif the distance Matoru had hit the front, followed by Clessamor, with Old Surrey and Roaming together. Once in line for home Old Surrey came away to win by three lengths from Roaming, with Matoru a length away. Details of resuits: — KAWA KAWA HURDLES (Of £200; li miles 130yds.) 2 Charade (Mr A. W.
