SERIES OF FIGHTS
AMERICAN BOXER IN AUSTRALIA
RAY ACTIS ON NIAGARA
Looking more than 11.8, his normal fighting weight, Ray Actis, a firstclass American light-heavyweight, passed through Auckland last week on the Niagara en route to Sydney, where he is under engagement by Sports Arena for a series of fights. His powerful shoulders make it easy to believe that Actis has a reputation as a puncher. Along with him as manager was Lew Powell, in whom no one would pick any New Zeaianu characteristics. But that is to be expected, for Powell was born in Wellington 50 years ago and went to the States as a child—and that was the last time he saw the Dominion.
Actis, according to his manager, has had about 50 professional bouts in five years, and has won 30 odd oy the k.o. route. Among the string of victims three years ago were Frank P.owsey and Johnny Miler, who visited Australia when past their prime. The first opponent for Actis, who comes from San Francisco, is Ron Richards, triple Australian titleholder, so the visitor will be well tested In his opening bout. Powell approached Auckland boxing authorities during his brief sojourn in Auckland. He stated that if a fight was offering on the return journey from Australia, Actis would be willing to meet any man New Zealand could place in the ring against him.
