INCREASE IN PRICE STATEMENT BY SECRETARY Following the publication recenLl. of a statement that several Aucklanc bakery firms were not making hot cross buns this Easter because of tht cost of employing additional labour, a “Chronicle” reporter made enquiries in the trade in Wanganui yesterday It was learned that all firms will be making the buns as usual, but an in* crease in price is being made. Th recent industrial legislation concern ing the employment of labour is h&v ing its effect, and many bakers fine it difficult to meet the situation. The secretary of the Wangant Master Bakers’ Association, Mr. E. \by F. Johns, when approached stated' “The new legislation concerning the employment of casual bakers it making the task of providing breac and other baked provisions at holiday times a difficult one. A jobbing baker must be paid fl for eight hours’ work on Thursday prior to Good Friday, and also an additional £2 for this day and Easter Monday, although he does not work on the latter two days. This is due to a provision in the Factories Act which stipulates that an employee must be paid at treble rale for one day's labour a fortnight before a holiday.’’
