W.D.F.U.

RATA-PLTORINO BRANCH

On Wednesday of last week the Rata-Putorino branch held their fourth birthday in the form of a social afternoon in the Rata Hall. Visitors were present from the Hunterville, Marton and Tutaenui branches, also Mrs. Wickham, Wanganui, and Mrs. Field, Palmerston North. Telegrams of good wishes were received from Mrs. Colquhoun, of Feilding, and Mrs. Howell, of Palmerston North. Apologies were received from Mrs. Swansson and the Hunterville, Bonny Glen and Halcombe branches.

After reading the Creed, Mrs. Harvey welcomed the visitors and thanked them all for coming along (some from long distances) to help make the afternoon a success.

Mrs. Harvey then introduced Mrs. Wickham, who spoke most interestingly on the aims of the W.D.F.U. She also related some of the humorous experiences she has had as secretary of the housekeeping section. Mrs. Wickham was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for her able address, which was much appreciated by all present. Mrs. Field also spoke very ably on the wonderful work the housekeepers are doing in the country districts. She said one of her greatest difficulties was to get enough suitable women to fill all the calls she gets for housekeepers. Mrs. Field was heartily applauded for her most interesting talk. Vocal items were given by Mrs. Pryce, Mrs. A. H. Rhodes and Miss Z. Harvey and were much appreciated. A competition which caused quite a lot of amusement was making a fashionable hat out of a sheet of newspaper and seven pins. The judges had quite a task in selecting the best, eventually choosing Mrs. Grey 1 and Mrs. Diehl 2. A dainty afternoon lea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Haywood, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Ellery and Miss Gardiner and brought, a very enjoyable afternoon Io a close.
