FEILDING FIXTURE

EIGHT IN CLP RACE

REVIEW OF PROSPECTS Fields for the opening day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, to be held to-day and on Monday, thinned out considerably when acceptances were taken, but that should not detract from the holiday appeal of this race meeting. Doubtless there will be a large crowd of Manawatu, Rangitikei, Wanganui and Taranaki racegoers present, in addition to a quota of Wellington followers of form. The track is reported to be in excellent order following the recent rains, and there is a good sole of grass. The electric totalisator will operate on the single pool system, with dividends on first and second placings in the proportion of 75 and 25 per cent, when there are five or more chances.

It may be an early stage of the season to find Ethiop at his best, but the top-weight cannot be overlooked in the Kawa Kawa Hurdles. Iddo, Aurora’s Love, Charade and Artful Dodger appear to have the best credentials among the others. Valroy, Colincamps, Lacan, Highball and Greyband are Feilding trained candidates for the Maiden Stakes, but the best form is held by Golden Pam (two good seconds recently). Huntino and Merry Thought may be best of the rest.

It is to be regretted that the £7OO stake for the Feilding Cup has not attracted a larger field, but the eight carded should maxe it an interesting contest. Catalogue appears well placed after his Awapuni win. Oratory is a brilliant miler and it remains to be seen whether she can hold Catalogue at two furlongs further, though her breeding suggests stamina. Siegmund has raced without his share of luck lately, but he is a game finisher. Wotan’s turn cannot be far off. Big Dook is useful. Grateful has shown forward form, Lady Kyra is in at a very light weight, and Tahurangi might surprise. One cannot, however, go past the topweights. The youngsters in the Taonui Nursery Handicap include three with good form, and after the recent displays of Ecstatic it may be expected that the Laughing Prince filly will be preferred to Minga and Footloose.

, Only six are engaged in the Mangaone Handicap and included is the Laughing Lass—Great Hope bracket, which may be the favourite combination with backers. Notium has good recent form and Florence Mills is a smart promoted hack.

Considerable interest will be attached to the form in the distance hack event, the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, as several contestants are engaged in Monday's trophy race. Donegal. Conveyer, Bonny Glow, Warehi, Scarf Dance and Puroto appear to have the best credentials.

Ten are engaged in the Ongo Hack Handicap, with Erebus, Jazz Boy, Pekoe, Rhodesian, Malibu and Noisy Night likely to appeal. The seven-furlong Halcombe Handicap concludes the day’s programme, and here The Bigot (fresh up), Clessamor and Old Surrey are a likely trio. The following may be well supported in their respective engagements:— Kawa Kawa Hurdles. —Aurora’s Love, Artful Dodger, Ethiop. Maiden Stakes.—Golden Pam, Hutino, Merry Thought. Feilding Cup.—Catalogue, Oratory, Siegmund. Taonui Nursery.—Ecstatic, Minga, Footloose. Mangaone Handicap. Laughing Lass-Great Hope bracket, Notium.
