FARMERS AT WORKS

INTERESTING DAY GRADING OF PIGS

A demonstration was held under the auspices of the Taranaki District Pig Council on Friday at the Imlay Freezing Works. There was a good representation of farmers from as far south as Fordell and Turakina. The party had a very interesting day judging the pigs on the hoof, estimating the weights and specifying lhe grade that they would kill out at. An opportunity was given to check up on these figures after the works' grader had officially graded and weighed the pigs, which resulted, much to the surprise of the farmers, in only two being graded first, two second and two third.

A demonstration of interest was given by the works' grader on different types of pigs and the works veterinary inspector fully explained various phases of disease. During the period that the pigs were being killed, Mr. Harkness conducted the party over the works, demonstrating the killing, wool-scouring and classification, manufacture ol meatmeal and blood and bone and various other byproducts. At the conclusion a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the N.Z. Refrigerating Company for their generous co-operation in supplying lunch and placing the whole of their staff and works at the services ot the farmers. Tins was endorsed by several speakers and was carried by acclamation. Several speakers expressed tile great value ot this type of education and expressed the hope that next year would see another demonstration. This sentiment was also expressed by the supervisor, who stated that in future it was hoped that demonstrations would be on pigs grown by Pig Clubs which would mean that a far greater value would be obtained from this work, as a complete set of records would be available from birth to slaughter.
