EASTER RACES
HOLIDAY MEETINGS ELLERSLIE AND FEILDING MANY FIXTURES IN N.Z. Principal interest in the North Island will rest with the Auckland and Feilding meetings.
At Ellerslie, the Easter Handicap, the Great Northern Oaks and the Great Northern Champagne Stakes will be decided on Saturday.
The Feilding Cup, with a stake o£ £7OO, will be run on Saturday, and will be contested by a field ot eight.
The Wairarapa Racing Club s meeting at Tauherenikau will occupy attention on Saturday and Monday, and fields may be a little better than those at Feilding.
On Easter Monday the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will be commenced at Riccarton, and the Waipukurau meeting will be an extra fixture in the North Island.
The Great Easter and the Great Autumn will be the principal handicap events at Riccarton, and the weight-for-age events will be the Challenge Stakes and the Champagne Stakes.
In spite of her steadier of 9.6 Stretto promises to be a well-backed candidate in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Wanganui will be represented by Icing in the Great Northern Oaks and by Rehearsal and Russian Ballet in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes on Saturday.
Tray Bit (7.3) was omitted from the list of acceptors for the Easter Handicap originally telegraphed. This makes the total engaged sixteen.
F. E. Baker, who has had a good leal of success as a hurdle and steeplechase rider, will ride Stretto in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie.
L. J. Ellis will ride Amelita in th< Riverton Cup.
Wild Career will run in the Riverion Cup and then go to Christchurch for the Great Easter Handicap and the Great Autumn Handicap.
After riding at Ellerslie on Saturday, L. H. Clifford will travel by plane to Christchurch on Sunday to fulfil riding engagements on Dictate and Lady Ina at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Monday.
L. Dulieu, who will be attending the Feilding meeting, will ride Wotan. Footloose, and Davistock.
Mrs A. W. McDonald is now on a health recruiting trip to Australia; and her big team has been taken over by Alan McDonald.
For the Waverley Racing Club’s autumn meeting, to be held on Saturday of next week, acceptances are due to close at 8 o’clock next Tuesday.
There will be only one bracket in the Feilding race-book, this being in the Mangaone Handicap, in which Laughing Lass and Great Hope, both owned by Mr T. A. Duncan, will be coupled on the machine.
The Wanganui Jockey Club has decided to add £5O to the stake for the Wanganui Guineas of 1940, entries for which will close on June 10, 1938. This will make the race a sweepstake ?f £5 each for starters, with £450 idded.
It has been suggested that the Wanganui Jockey Club may revive the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes at the forthcoming spring meeting in an endeavour to ascertain whether support would be forthcoming for this weight-for-age event. An early announcement would be welcomed by owners.
Lo Zingaro left the Grange Stud, Westmere, yesterday and will be shipped back to Melbourne from Wellington to-daj. This Solario stallion has been enjoying a three months’ spell at Mr M. Grogans stud. Returning with him are Pharaoh (Chiet Ruler—Lady Pym) and a Lord Warden colt, half-brother to Shy, this pair going over to J. T. Jamieson’s stable. Jamieson is sending over t& the Grange Stud a Lo Zingaro colt and a Parenthesis colt, both belonging to the former New Zealand trainer.
