45-HOUR WEEK PREMIER VICTORIOUS : SUPPORT FOR PROPOSALS

The Premier, M. Daladier, reading a Ministerial declaration in the Chamber, appealed to workers and employers to settle their disputes in a conciliatory way. The Government, he
said, intended to submit Bills completing a modern labour charter. The slowing-down of the defence programme could not be permitted.
Within an hour ot M. Daladier’s speech the strikes in the Government aircraft factories had ended. The workers are resuming to-morrow, the terms being a 7 per cent, increase and a 45-hour week, the extra five hours to be paid at normal rates.
M. Daladier was victorious at the first meeting of the Chamber of Deputies, which agreed, by 576 votes to five, to postpone interpellation in the Government’s policy and to immediately discuss the financial proposals.
The Finance Commission of the Chamber examined M. Daladier’s plan, which asks for a decree over powers of finance until July 31, and proposes to bring all expenditure v/;thin the framework of the Budget. It also proposes a slight increase in taxation, special taxes on industries engaged in rearmament, and additional advances from the Bank of France to a limit of £63,000,000 with a loan if advances are insufficient.
