WILLIE WIN HI . FAST MILE AT RICCARTON. CHRISTCHURCH, April 12. The weather was dull and cold when training work started at Riccarton this morning, but the sun made an appearance after breakfast. On the plough Paper Slipper and Wild Chase were in close company throughout seven furlongs in Imin. 30sec. Both these horses look well. Sovereign Lady was not hurried over seven furlongs, the last six taking Imin. lOsec. She has come through a good preparation. Good Passage and Lazybones reeled off five furlongs in Imin. 3 2-ssec. Shirred Ribbon and Mungatoon were on terms at the end of a mile in Imin. 47 l-ssec., both were finishing on well. On the course proper The Wrecker ran half a mile in 49 l-ssec. Kinnoull did a mile in Imin. 49 3-ssec. the last half taking 54see. He could have done better, and looks well. Rebel Lad went about a mile and a quarter, taking Imin. 46sec. for the last mile. Studley Royal traversed a mile in Imin. 46 l-ssec. after covering the first half in 52sc. Love Affair and Dividend were on terms at the end of five furlongs in Imin. 3sec. Rabble gave a start and a beating to Haughty Winner over six furlongs, which the former did in Imin. 16 1-5 sec. It was a useful effort.
Settlement beat Ruling Star over half a mile in 49sec. Financiere and Gillie dashed over half a mile up the back in 48 l-ssec. Kilrobe easily beat Romain down the straight in similar time. These were smart sprints.
Nightcalm was in front of Happy Night over seven furlongs in Imin. 32 3-ssec. Defaulter and Glenacre were going well all through a sixfurlong spin in Imin. 18 3-ssec. Gas Mask, Haulbowline, and Courtyard were in that order at the end of a mile in Imin 43 3-ssec., a useful effort. Dictate and Davolo, after a slow start, were well matched over six furlongs in Imin. 1 3-ssec. Comus joined in over the last four, which they ran in 48 2-ssec. The first-named pair are in good order.
Rebel Chief ran a mile in Imin. 47 sec., the last half taking 52sec. Wine Card and Paper Note were on terms at the end of five furlongs in Imin. 3scr. Bright Prospect had Golden Chest as a mate over six furlongs in Imin. 18sec., the last four taking 50 3-ssec. Golden Chest won easily. Pelmet and Spartan ran half a mile in 48 4-ssec., Night Halk and Nigella following in 48sec—a good effort. Willie Win broke away from the .mile post, and after covering the first half in 51 2-ssec., completed the journey in Imin. 42 2-ssec. He was going well all the way and it was the best, gallop of the morning. He has come on well lately, and looks like being in great order for the Great Autumn Handicap. Lisnacree was lame after a spin over five furlongs. The trouble is in the shoulder, and a spell will be necessary. Conception jumped in good style in a school over the brush hurdles. A report is in circulation that Brunhild is a doubtful visitor to Riccarton.
