ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY

CHRISTCHURCH, April 11. One of two boys who were on their way in charge of a constable to the Borstal Institute at Invercargill, escaped from custody when the parly landeci at Lyttelton from the steamei express Rangatira on Saturday morning, and lias not yet been recaptured. As the constable was shepherding his Iwo charges front the steamer to the tiain, one of them .slipped away irto the crowd and the constable could not pursue him without letting the second boy loose. Shortly after’, wards a motor-cycle was taken from Cunningham Terrace and a carrier subsequently reported to the policethat he had seen the machine being ridden through the main street by a boy who answered to the description of the escapee.
Both boys escaped some time ago from the Weraroa training farm and travelled in converted cars through the Taranaki, Rotorua, and Tauranga districts, committing thefts on the way. When recaptured they appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in lhe Children’s Court at Palmerston North, on April 2 to answei charges of theft and car conversion, and were both sentenced to the Borstal Institute for two years.
