MARTON BOROUGH
MEETING 0E COUNCIL
The Marton Borough Council met on Monday evening, Mr F. Purnell (Mayor) presiding over Crs. G. B. Gregory, A Honeyman, T. Barton, W. J. Mogridge, and W. B. Langston. Leave of absence was granted Crs. K. A. Williams, A. J. B. Sicely and A. Mclndoe; also Mr C. C. McDonald town clerk, on account of the serious illness of his mother, Mrs J. J. McDonald.
Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows:
Highways engineer, asking council to supply statement on the main highways work in this borough for the year ended March 31, 1938, together with future proposals.- Referred to overseer and town clerk.
Main Highways Board, advising’ that the board has decided to increase the subsidy on highway bridging to £3 for £1 as from April 1, 1938.—Received. * Memorial to Pioneers at St. Stewart Committee, forwarding a copy of the minutes of a meeting of representatives held at Marton on March 21, 1938. —The council to give the proposed memorial to pioneers at Mt. Stewart its support and to await further details from the next meeting of delegates at Marton on April 26. Under-Secretary, forwarding copies of the Municipal Amendment Bill advising that the Hon. Minister proposes to proceed with the Bill during next session of Parliament and asking local authorities to offer any comments they so desire on the provisions of the Bill.—Referred to finance committee to report to the council if they desire to make any recommendation. Hon. secretary, Chamber of Commerce, conveying a resolution of appreciation for the services rendered by the Mayor and councillors in the interests of the borough.—Received. An application was received from hon. secretary, Rangitikei Hockey Sub-Association, asking council to grant permission for the use of the western side of the park for the purpose of playing hockey during the coming season.—Permission granted, and the question of gate charges was referred to Crs. Barton, Williams and Mogridge to confer with the Rangitikei Rugby Union and Hockey Association with power to act.
M. A. McCandlish, calling attention to willows growing in the Tutaenui Stream near Station Road Bridge, stating that the stream is being blocked and is causing erosion on her property at Ahuru Street.—Referred to overseer for immediate attention. An application was received from the Marton Old Boys’ Football Club, lor use of the park and park lights for football practice on Tuesday nights during the season.—Agreed to on certain conditions.
Advertising manager, 2ZB, with reference to advertising during the special “Marton Hour” broadcast every Friday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.— Received.
E. Rabbidge, Ltd., with reference to the patching of the gas holder, accepting the council’s offer to proceed with the work under special conditions, stating that work will commence within thre to four months’ time.—Agreed to.
Wanganui Employers’ Association, advising that the council has been struct out by the Court as a cited party to the Cleaners, Caretakers, and Lift Attendants’ Award.—Received. A report for C. Mogridge on the swimming baths was referred to the main meeting of the new council.
Gas Manager’s Report. Mr A. J. Holdaway reported as follows: No trouble has been experienced with the plant during the month. During the month 55 tons of coal were carbonised yielding an average amount of coke for sale equal to 6i cwts. to the ton. During the month one combination, 2 cookers, and one gas fire were fitted.
Overseer’s Report.
Mr W. R. Brant reported: During the past month the general maintenance work has ben attended to. Five sewerage connections have been installed. Water tables have been cleaned out on several streets. The storage tanks at the filter station have been cleaned out and lime-wash-ed. The side of the road on Signal Street has been metalled, tarred sanded and rolled. The roadway frontages of Messrs Stewart and Sutcliffe, Harris Street, have been tarred. Calico Line: On April 4 a fire plug was torn out by the grader. I have installed a new junction, lowered the mains where required and fixed up all connections. 1 do not expect any more trouble on this road. The reservoir is holding 12ft. 4in. of water and the embankments arc in good order.
Treasurer’s Report.
Mr C. C. McDonald reported that the receipts for April 1 to 11 were £209 16s 6d, the chief items being gcu consumers £BO 12s 2d, licences £76 12s and rates £2l 8s lOd. Building permit, Marton Sash and Door Co., £2OO.
