MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Wanganui’ City Council was held last* evening, the Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers) presiding. Those present were Crs J. Siddells, T. Sperring, O. Hales, G. Bennett, G. H. Trott, J. B. Cotterill, M.P., J. Robertson, G. J. Jones, A. E. Halligan, and J. D. Crowley.
The Wanganui Football Association was granted the use of Victoria Park and Williams Domain during the coming season on the usual conditions.
A petition was received from the residents of Hatrick Street asking that Hatrick Street should be tarsealed. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
Mrs J. M. Stephenson wrote com : plaining about the condition of Brunswick Road. Mrs Stephenson pointed out that there was a danger from flying stones.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
An application for the use of Cook’s Gardens during the Easter vacation for its Rugby tournament was received from the Pirates Football Club. —The club was granted the use of the ground on Easter Saturday morning and Easter Monday. Applications for subsidies from the Wanganui St. John Free Ambulance and the Salvation Army were referred to the incoming council on the motion of Cr. G. H. Trott.
Arrangements were finalised for the exhibition of Coronation robe* and regalia at the Opera House qn May 22 and 28. The Mayor said that the Art Gallery had not been forgotten but the stage of the Opera Houss lent itself admirably for the exhibition.
The Wanganui Hockey Association applied for the use of Gonville Domain during the coming season ana Cook’s Gardens for two matches.— The use of Gonville Domain was granted, the question of terms and the application for the use of Cook’s Gardens being referred to the Works Committee.
The Mayor congratulated the town clerk, Mr G. Murch, and his staff on presenting the annual report and accounts so soon after the close of the financial year. “I am sure.” he said, ‘‘that, it will make interesting reading.”
It was decided to hold the next meeting of the council on May 3.
The meeting agreed to a recommendation from the Works Committee that the Transport Department be advised that the Automobile Association had agreed to erect an approach
sign “Beware of Traffic From the Left.” at the junction of No. 3 Line and Mount View Road. The Works Committee reported that it had considered a request that the roadway of Ngalo Street be extended and continued along the Sea Front to give access to a dwelling facing th j last-mentioned street, but could not see its way clear to recommend the work being undertaken. On the recommendation of the Wroks Committee it was decided that the footpath on the city side of Argyle Street should be tar-sealed and that a concrete slab be provided on the river side of Tulloch Street.
