TARIFF ASSISTANCE

VIEWS OF EMPLOYERS

[ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 11

“The tariff assistance so far given has been practically negligible and has done nothing more than assist employers to meet competition at the present costs,” declared Mr D. 1. Macdonald, Christchurch, when audressing the Second Court of Arbitration to-day on behalf of the employers in the Dominion clothing trade disputes. The protection given woula not go any way during the, coining season to meet any increase in costs which might arise from the present proceedings. The experience of the majority of factories was that trade was falling off and the menace oi overseas competition was becoming increasingly serious.
