PATEA

OBITUARY The death occurred with tragic suddeness on Thursday, at Stratford, of Mrs. H. Moyes, of Mountain Road Stratford. Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzsimons, of Patea, and was aged 18. Familiarly known as Joyce, in 1936 at Patea she was company leader of the Girl Guides and was the only Guide in the Patea troop to ever qualify for the all-round cord. She is survived by her husband and a baby daughter, a week old.

The funeral took place at Patea on Saturday, the Girl Guides forming a guard of honour.

GOLF OPENING Fifty players participated in the opening day of the Patea Golf on Saturday, the Canadian foursome winners being Mrs; R. W. Haddow and N. Gardiner, who also had the best gross score as well as net. J. C. Taylor won the medal round. Mr. J. N. Anderson, president, extended a welcome to members and visitors from Manutahi and Waverley, and expressed the wish that the season would be a pleasant and profitable one as more improvements were made on the links, A telegram of good wishes was received from Mrs. Ted Hammonds, of Christchurch. Three cheers were given for the ladies. CROQUET CLOSING Weather did not permit play oh Saturday at the closing of the Patea Croquet Club, but the members met together for afternoon tea, and the president, Mrs. F. Ramsbottom, presented the prizes won during the year to Mrs. F. Spooner, yankee tournament and Mrs. C. Thompson, B Cup. PERSONAL Mrs. T. E. Roberts is visiting Paraparamu. Mrs. C. Masters, Stratford, was a visitor to Patea on Saturday. BOWLING The Waverley veterans’ team visited Patea last week and carried off the honours. Each club has won one match and thhe final will be watched with interest. Results were: Patea (Ramsbottom, Bargrove, McClymont, Carey) 17, Waverley (Salter, Southcombe, Howie, J. Palmer) 29. FOOTBALL Patea seniors defeated Athletic on Saturday, at Hawera, by 10 to 3. In the fourths’ match, at Patea, Waverley were defeated 9 to 0. Outstanding players in the Patea forwards were F. Wills, J. Broughton, C. Hurley, F. Lund, -nd R. Mcßae, and in the backs C. and G. McKenna and R. Hill. Thirty-one plavers were tried out.

PERSONAL Mrs F. Mairs is visiting Hawke’s Bay. Mr and Mrs T. Nelson have returned from a holiday tour. Mr and ' Ts E. Reed have returned from the South Island. Messrs H. Palmer, N. R. Coad, and B. Sheild, of the Patea R.S.A., leave Wellington on the 19th. inst. io attend the Anzac celebrations in Sydney.

The death occurred at Stoke, Nelson, recently, c ” Mr Herbert Edwards, a son-in-law of Mrs HoneyfiJd, senr., “Egmont View.”

A new member, Mr Agnew, was elected.

Mrs O. Hawkin, assisted by her daughter, Mrs Vickers, entertained the riders and a number of friends at afternoon tea after the meet.
