NOTIFICATION BY U.S.A. Received April 1, 6.40 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 1. The United States has formally notified Britain, France and the Dominions of her intention to invoke the Escalator Clause. FLEEING FROM WAR ZONE TERRIBLE HARDSHIPS SUFFERED BY FUGITIVES PERPIGNAN, March 30. Thousands o£ Republican soldiers and civilians, fleeing from the war zone, arrived after terrible hardships in the Pyrenees. It is feared many are succumbing in the snowclad mountains. STILL UNSUBDUED LERIDA SURROUNDED ON THREE SIDES FIERCE FIGHTING IN PROGRESS BARCELONA, March 31. Lerida is surrounded on three sides, but still unsubdued, despite heavy shelling accompanied by fierce fighting in the adjacent countryside. The rebel front runs in two straight lines from Jaca to Lerida and Lerida to Teruel, aggregating 220 miles. The rebels report the capture of an international battalion consisting of British officers and men. ADMISSION BY GERMAN BOMBED BRITISH STEAMER STANWELL SIMILAR ATTEMPTS ON OTHER SHIPS BARCELONA, March 31. A German lieutenant, Rudolf Rukcr, and three others of th? crew of a German bomber, told the Defence Ministry officials, after being shot down and taken prisoner, that their ’plane bombed the steamer Stanwell on March 15. They added that they came from a German air base at Pollenza and bombed and attempted to bomb other British ships.
