TROTTING
MANAWATU MEETING FIXTURE AT AWAPUNI BRIEF REVIEW OF ( ARD. The Manawatu Trotting Club will open the West Coast trotting circuit at the Awapuni course to-day. Exceptionally strong fields are engaged, owners and trainers from afield having taken the opportunity of making their appearance at the Manawatu gathering prior to going on to the Taranaki and Hawera meetings whlcn follow at intervals of one week. During the past few years the lightharness branch has been attracting steadily-increasing interest in the Manawatu, and the club is making fitting endeavour to meet the demands by awarding higher stakes. By so doing a better class of competitor is being attracted to the club’s fixtures, and included in to-day’s fields is a strong contingent from the Auckland Province. In addition, South Island stables, which almost invariably carry off a very fair percentage of the prizemoney, are also well represented. Thus a most succssful meeting appears to be assured. The club will operate the single pool system of betting, with two dividends where the fields are of five to eight runners, and three dividends where ther are nine or more starters, and the following horses should run prominently:— Longburn Handicap: Vanora, Zingarri, Captain Scott. Awapuni Handicap: Princess Beverley, Canadian, Tonee. Pohangina Handicap: Cavan Chief, Jackaranda, Ropala. Manawatu Cup: Zincali, Policy, Our War. Ladies’ Bracelet: John’s Last, Captain Scott, Max Havoc. Stewards’ Handicap: Philario, Cavan Chief. Jackaranda. McDonald Handicap: Nelson Chief, Autumn Lu, Great Sonoma. President’s Handicap: Our War, Savoldi, Trevor de Oro. Following is the list cf acceptors for to-day:— 12.15 longburn handicap. (01 £l3O : 3.5 class; 11 miles.)
