THE GRAND NATIONAL
PLUNGE ON BLUE SHIRT. DRAMATIC BETTING CHANGES On the eve of the Grand National Steeplechase there was a most dramatic change in the betting market, states a message to a Melbourne exchange, as the result of a huge plunge on Blue Shirt, who was sent to the head of the quotations at 100 to 12. Two weeks earlier, Royal Mail, last year’s winner, who had been supplanted as favourite by the French contender, Takvor Pacha, regained his position and retained it until the change brought about by the attempted coup on Blue Shirt. Battleship, at the final call-over was quoted at 40 to one; Royal Mail was at 10 to one; Royal Danieli, the run-ner-up, at 20 to one and Workman, who finished third, was at 25 to ope. The odds against Takvor Pacha had lengthened to 100 to six.
