STRATFORD RACES

ATTRACTIVE AUTUMN CARD ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY ' The autumn meeting of the Stratford Racing Club will be held to-day, and judging by the list of acceptors there will be some really good racing, in spite of the fact that some horses claim dual engagements. The Stratford course provides an excellent .esting ground, for the final portion if the course up the straight to the winning post is uphill. The totalisator at Stratford is operated on the single-pool system, with dividends on first and second when the number of starters is in excess of four. Ample provision is made for investors with the enlarged totalisa'or house.

The tracK is reported to be in excellent order, there beir.g a good sole of grass in spite of the protracted dry spelt , . With the business premises closing at the same time as the first race is timed to commence, motorists can considerably assist the officials at the meeting to-day in preventing congestion at parking areas, by having correct change, and by carrying out instructions of men in charge of parking. The club has ample parking space available and a staff capable of expeditiously handling the large crowd expected. Arrangements hate been made for the sale of car tickets in Stratford. Patrons purchasing such tickets are requested to have same ready to hand to the collectors on entering the parking area. The first race on the programme is the Trial Stakes, and with the likely absence of Wee Ethel seven may line up at the barrier. In Lucrece, Glenthawn, Autosweep and Fafner backers have a useful quartet from .vhicb to make the final selection. Six are likely to contest the Flying Handicap, though Dancing Lady and Race Boy claim dual engagements. Race Call appears to retain his winning form and he may again account for Notium. A much larger field is engaged in the Juvenile Handicap, and of the dozen that will probably line up Footloose, Golden Orchid and Ripple should count most cupporters. The principal event is the Anniversary Handicap, and even with the defection of Airam eight remain, headed by the Melbourne Cup winner Wotan. This chap showed promise at the Egmont meeting and must not be overlooked. Lowenberg is partial to the Stratford course, having won the Stratford Cup. Wildflower has been running consistently. Clessamor may stay out the distance. Ohanga should be in the picture after his Opunake Cup display. Of the remaining three Silvanus should appeal. Lowenberg, Ohanga and Wotan should be in request. The Autumn Hurdles has attracted an acceptance of eight, which is satisfactory these days. Ruaform is improving but Sporting Song, Royal Fire and Forest Glow may make more appeal. Because of the unique trophies attached to the Budge Memorial Hack race, the field is certain to be a large one. Spender has been scratched. Naughty Marietta, Chat, Bonny Glow, Student Prince, Amatory, Windscreen, Shangri La, Amoroso and Maahanui may be the probables. Three Wanganui candidates are engaged, these being Amatory, Sam’s Choice and Lady Hoariri, but the last-named would be preferred if the track were not so firm. Of the trio Amatory should do Student Prince appeal.

The defection of Airam and Spender leaves seven in the Highweight Handicap, in which Taitoru, Silk Sox and Race Camp may be best supported. The hack sprint, with which the day’s racing concludes, may have a tmaller field than the ten engaged, but Race Boy, Sam’s Choice and Autoiweep should be in demand. Scratchings announced yesterday ,or all engagements were Spender, Triune, Airam and Eastern Heir. The following may be in request in their respective engagements:— Trial Stakes.—Glenthawn, Autosweep, flying Handicap.—Race Call, Notium. Juvenile Handicap.—Footloose, Golden Orchid, Ripple. Anniversary Handicap.—Lowenberg, Wildflower, Ohanga. Autumn Hurdles.—Sporting Song, Royal Fire. A. W.
