LONG GOLF MATCH
SIXTEEN YEARS’ CONTEST VETERANS' WEEKLY MEETING LONDON, March 5. One of the longest golf matches on record has just been terminated bydeath. It began in 1922 and at the close the scores were:—George New. 86,379 strokes; W. R. Chamberlain, 88,016 strokes. The match was played on the nineholes course at Littlecote, Wiltshire, by two veterans of Chilton Folia!., near Swindon—Mr. New, the postmaster, and Mr. Chamberlain, farmer. Death has interrupted the marathon.
And it was the winner, Mr. New--1637 up on strokes, 479 up on holes—who died this week. It was arranged 16 years ago that only death or pnysical infirmity should end the match. The veterans met every Thursday. The winner each week entertained the loser to tea. They played 7326 holes and went round 814 times.
