“Memories”
(Written for our page by “Laughing Waterlady’s Sweetheart.”)
A wild green path with tangled thorn and blossom, Growing old, untrodden through the misty years; Where children used to play so merry-hearted. Confiding here their hopes and all their fears.
Once summer’s eves were spent in plucking roses; The wild pink blossoms of the trailing rambler rose. And in the noon-tide neath a swift breeze passing Would trail awry their coloured ribbon bows.
I should like to walk some early summer’s twilight To paths along that green and aged track. To leave along the damp beneath the roses. A note to summons all the children back.
They do not come but still the place seems haunted By some forgotten memory of the past. And I would wish that time flew not so swiftly. That seasons would not fade away so fast. That bird songs be the echo to my longings On thoughts now richer; mock at childhood’s ways. Tor I know that on a track by rambling roses Linger often the ghosts of sweeter days.
