INCREASE IN LIGHTERAGE CHARGES
HIGHER PAY FOR WATER- ' SIDERS INTIMATION TO HARBOUR BOARD Advising the Wanganui Harbour Board that it intended increasing the charges for port lighterage, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company states that it has taken that step because ot a retrospective increase in wages to watersiders. The company’s letter came before the board yesterday, and stated that the increases in lighterage charges would be retrospective as from March 1. Mr J. Robertson: Have the watersiders had any increase in wages lately? Mr W. J. Rogers (chairman ot the board): I thought it was some time
ago. Mr J. Patterson: We, as a board, have squealed when wool has gone by rail, but we have never said a word when produce goes coastwise. Mr W. J. Gardner (managing-sec-retary): We have got our wharfage on produce shipped coastwise. The letter from the Refrigerating Company was received. The charges now in operation are:— Wool, 3s a bale (a rise of 3d a bale). Casks, 12s 6d per ton (an increase of 2s). Butter, 12s 6d a ton (an increase of 2s).
