SENIOR POLICE MATRON

PASSING OF MRS. LEDGER. SISTER OF INSPECTOR CUMMINGS. [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 19. The death has occurred of Mrs. Catherine Ledger, of Wellington, senior police matron for New Zealand, who was on leave prior to her retirement in April after 21 years of devoted service h: the force. Her interest and practical help continued long after those placed under her care had passed out of her immediate control, and the amount, of charitable work she carried out among the more unfortunate people with whom she was inevitably brought into contact was extensive but known to few. For some time past she had been in hospital. She constantly received callers who remembered her kindness to them in more difficult times, and who wished to show their appreciation of her help. She is survived by a son in England. She was a sister of Police Commissioner D. J. Cummings, of Palmerston North.
