LIFE-SAVING AFFAIRS

PATERSON CUP COMPETITION GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ SHIELDS Competitions conducted by the Wanganui branch of the Royal Lifesaving Society for the various schools were concluded during the week. The performances generally showed a considerable improvement in the standard as compared with recent years, providing evidence of the great interest which has been taken by the teachers at the various schools in this branch of swimming. In granting extra time for swimming during February the Education Department has also been of great assistance to lifesaving generally. Following are the results: — Paterson Cup.—Miss J. Walton (Girls’ College) 1, Miss P. Parnell (Technical College) 2, Miss N. Anderson (Technical College) 3. Silver Medals.—Senior boys: W. Drewery (Wanganui East) 1. Senior girls: M. Smith (Gonville) 1. Junior girls: M. McGregor (Wanganui East) 1. E. Williamson (Gonville) 2, J. Harrison (Wanganui East) 3. Junior boys: T. Kettle (St. George’s School) 1, J. Stewart (Gonville) 2, S. Hickman (Gonville) 3. The judges in these events were Mrs. E. G. Bourke and Mr. T. Anderson. Mr. F. Lind acted as timekeeper and Mr. D. Sutton as starter. The Royal Life-saving Society’s competition for the Girls’ Shield resulted:—Wanganui East No. 1 team (June Harrison, Winnie Simpson, Mary McGregor and Joan Breed), 3min. 37 3-ssec., 1; Gonville, 3mis. 44 3-ssec., 2; Wanganui East No. 2 team, 3min. 51 4-ssec., 3. The Boys’ Shield resulted: Gonville (Stewart, Hickman, Batt, Donaldson), smin. 19sec., 1; Wanganui East, 6min. 19 4-ssec., 2. The judge was Mr. C. S. Swan, the starter Mr. f.
