riffi PRICE OF FOWL WHEAT At a meeting of poultryfnen at Palmerston North recently the following resolution was unanimously carried: “That the poultrymen in the Rangitikei and Manawatu districts wish to draw the Government’s attention to the high price of fowl wheat in relation to milling wneat. Although the Government have stated that fowl wheat is fixed at 4s below milling wheat poultrymen are being asked to pay from 7s 3d to 7s 9d per bushel in large quantities, whilst growers of milling wheat are only reeeiving 6s sid. This is all the more serious in view of the fact that eggs are 4d a dozen cheaper to-day than twelve months ago.” N.Z. NATIONAL PARTY FORMATION OF JUNIOR BRANCH A meeting of juniors was held in the Marton Jockey Club's rooms on Thursday, March 17, 1938, for the purpose of forming a junior branch for Marton in the Rangitikei Electorate. There was an attendance of fifty juniors of both sexes. Mr. A. Way acted ac secretary pro. tern. Mr. E. B. Gordon presided and explained the objects for which the meeting was called and congratulated the junior sub-committee that was appointed to canvass the district for members and the splendid result that had been attained. Mr. E. W. Barnett, chairman of the Manawatu junior branch, gave an interesting discourse on democracy and the aims and objects of a junior organisation, impressing upon those the urgent necessity for the younger generation to take an interest in politics and to keep in touch with world affairs. At the conclusion of his discourse the speaker was heartily applauded.

On the motion of Duncan Brice, seconded by David Gordon, it was unanimously resolved: “That a junior branch of the New Zealand National Party be formed in Marton.’’ Mr. C. Craig, of Rata, was unanimously elected president and acted as chairman for the remainder of the meeting. Other officers elected were: Vice-presidents, Miss B. Purcell and Mr. Noel Ingle; secretary, Mr. Duncan Brice; treasurer. Mr. Noel Ingle; committee, Messrs. K. Ellery, D. Gordon, Hugh, Marshall, R. Shield, E. Carter, M. Morrison, N. Northover, G. Selznick’s magnificent film production of “The Prisoner of Zenda” begins an engagement there with Ronald Colman, Madeleine Carroll and Douglas Fairbanks, jun., playing the leading roles. Colman plays the dual role of King Rudolf V and the adventurous Rassendyll in this tale of love and intrigue among the courts of Europe, which John Cromwell directed from a screenplay which John L. Balderston and Wells Root based on Edward Rose’s dramatisation of the Anthony Hope novel. Miss Carroll plays the beautiful Princess Flavia and young Fairbanks is seen as the dashing Rupert of Hontzau. The dance held by St. Francis’: Church in honour of Saint Patrick, in ' the Empire Hall on Thursday night, 1 attracted one of the largest as- i semblages that has ever graced the ; floor and everybody enjoyed a most ' pleasant evening. The floor was in ; wonderful order for dancing and the artistic and appropriate decorations added to the pleasures of the evening. The spot waltz was won by Mr. Ray Carter and Mrs. F. Shapleski and the Monte Carlo waltz by Mr. Sanson and Miss Dulcie Green. Messrs. A. Gracie and L. Barry ably filled the position of M.C’s. The supper arrangements were capably supervised by Mrs. A. O. Scott and Mrs. Ralph Sutcliffe. The New Gaiety Dance Band (Wanganui) was in great form and its selections were highly appreciated. HAWKESTONE J .ADIES’ GOLF CLUE The annual nice ling of the Hawke--1 stone Ladies’ Golf Club was held on Friday evening, Mrs. F. A. Hemplcman presiding over a good attendan-;? of members. Annual Report The annual report and balancesheet were approved of as follow: “Your committee has much pleasure in presenting to you the seventh annual report. The year has been a most satisfactory one, both from a financial and a playing standpoint. We were favoured with good weather during most of the season, and, the links
