MARKED MEN
% AUSTRIAN SOCIALISTS READY TO JOIN DEFENCE OF INDEPENDENCE [By Telegraph Press Association—Copyright] Received March 9, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, March 9. The first unhindered meeting of Socialists since the suppression of the party in 1934 assembled to hear threport of the workers’ delegation to Dr. Schuschnigg, says the Vienna correspondent of The Times. The delegation stated that the Chancellor gave assurances that the workers would be accorded not less rights than other sections of the population. The subsequent debate indicated that the workers were ready to join in the struggle to defend Austrian independence if their demands were granted, including the restoration o> independent trades unions. Thu workers are not optimistic, but knowing that the Nazis possess lists of Communists and Socialists, they feel that they are marked men and have little to lose.
The Government newspapers complain that the Nazis are continually exceeding the limits of their concessions. They have begun drilling openly and completely disregard thu ban»on the swastika.
