WOMEN’S INSTITUTES MATABOA MEETING Last Thursday the Mataroa branch of the Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting, a large number of members being present. Mrs. Constable gave a very interesting lecture on first aid. The meeting was then opened with the institute Ode and Aspirations, Mrs. Bosher presiding. The motto for the month was supplied by Mrs. Bosher. The Ruapehu Federation garden party is to be held on Saturday next at which all members are asked to give their assistance. Mesdames Weeber and Homer were the delegates elected to attend the Ruapehu Federation’s annual meeting to be held on April 27. The delegate nominated for the Dominion Conference in July was Mrs. Bosher. Nominations were also received for the institute committee, any further nominations to be handed to the secretary by March 16. The apples supplied by Mrs. W. J. Williams met a ready sale, the proceeds of which go to the endowment fund. Mrs. Stevens kindly donated 5s towards the institute funds. Mrs. Ryan kindly presented for a competition a lady’s spade. It was decided to judge the premier flower during the social half-hour at each meeting, the winning bloom to be placed on the president’s table. Mesdames Ryan and Harper tied for the first place in the premier flower competitions covering the whole year. The results of the competitions this month were:—Premier flower: Mrs. Ryan. Best nut or fruit toffee: Mesdames Weeber and Ryan equal 1, Mrs. Bosher 2 5 It was arranged to hold a tennis party and social evening this (Thursday) evening. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.

FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S INSTITUTES CONFERENCE CONDUCTED BY MRS. KELSO A school or conference for officers, V.O.’s and Institute members, was conducted on Tuesday and was continued yesterday in the Trinity Parlour. Mrs. Kelso addressed the members who were present from North and South Taranaki and Ruapehu Federations, in addition to the Wanganui and District Federation, on matters likely to be helpful to their institute life. Several remits to come before the Dominion conference in July were ciscussed and many suggestions puu forward As Westmere Institute was holding its annual meeting, Mrs. Kelso kindly met a number of its members, giving a resume of the day’s discussions and answering queries. Among those present were: Miss J. points.' For the matches, he was earning purses of several hundred pounds and his second and third defeats of Sarron. unlike the first, were clearcut and decisive. There was no bout in Auckland.
