Explosion in Quarry Due to what is presumed to have been a premature explosion of gelignite in Waipuna Quarry, Raetihi, three men, residents of that district’ J. Bristol, 11. Haitana, and J. Roach were taken Io Raetihi Hospital on Tuesday evening. Bristol, who only sustained slight, injury, has resume*, work, while Haitana, suffering from fragments of shelirock in the eyes, and .1. Roach, a badly lacerate.’, hand, are still in hospital. A fourth man also received slight injuries but. did not enter hospital. The men were employed by the Public Works Department taking shellrock from the quarry for metalling six miles of the Waipuna Road, which runs between Raetihi and Pipiriki. This work Is nearing the stage of completion and Hie end of the week would have seen it through. Just how lhe accident occurred is not ascertainable at present, until such times ns the men in hospital are lit to give a statement. As soon as possible after lhe accident they were attended by Dr. Folthan. and removed to hospital.
