N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS SEMI-FINALS REACHED ELIMINATION OF ANGAS 1 Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. Another surprise occurred in the men’s singles during to-day’s play in the annual New Zealand lawn tennis championships. This was the defeat of Angas, Canterbury's No. 1 player, by Pattinson, who is ranked No. 8 on the same provincial list. The latter won in five sets. Brown was taken to four sets by Gunn, while Stedman and Mayson won in straight sets from two Wellington representatives, France and Bedford, respectively. Pattinson will play Stedman in one semi-final to-morrow and Brown wilt oppose Mayson in the other. Miss M. Beverley, holder of the Auckland title, was taken to three sets by Miss Cooke, while her sister. Miss N. Beverley, won a three-set contest against Miss Bishop. Miss Miller and Miss Plummer both won in straight sets. In to-morrow’s semifinals, Miss Miller meets Miss N. Beverley and Miss Plummer will play Miss M. Beverley.

.Good progress was made in all sections of the doubles, while several matches were also decided in the men's and ladies’ plate competitions. The weather was again fine and warm, with a strong north-easter’x wind blowing. This caused small clouds of dust to rise from the worn service lines. Poole (Canterbury.) beat Mrs France (Wellington) and Miss Bubb (Australia) 6-2, 6-2. Misses Bishop and Cooke beat Misses Plummer (Wellington) and Glenny (Hawke's Bay) 6-4, 9-7. Misses N. and M. Beverley (Matamata) beat Misses Macfarlane and Taylor 7-5, 6-2. Combined Doubles Second Round France and Mrs France (Wellington) beat Turner and Mrs Shroff 6-4, 6-1. Bold (Wellington) and Miss Miller (North Otago' beat Dickie and Miss. Dickie (Taranaki) 6-3, 8-6. Penfold and Miss D.
