DEATH AT CRICKET
FATHER OF ALL BLACK MR JAMES NELSON CORNER [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. While playing cricket at Victoria Park this evening, James Nelson Corner, warehouseman, married, aged 57, of Takapuna, suddenly collapsed and died. At the time of his death, Corner was keeping wicket foia team from Briscoe and Company, Limited, where he was employed. Dr. Pettit was called and certified that death was due to heart failure. No inquest will be necessary. Corner was the father of Mervyn Corner, the well-known Rugby haliback who represented Auckland and was a member of the 1935 All Black team w'hich toured Great Britain. As a young man, Corner himself was a prominent half-back of Auckland club teams, the last being the railway team, for which he played about wartime. For some years he was also a member of the Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association. Corner's two daughters are well known in Auckland tennis and golf circles.
