TARANAKI CUP

NEW PLYMOUTH MEETING WEST COAST CIRCUIT REVIEW OF PROSPECTS The West Coast racing circuit will epen to-day with the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting, which will be concluded on Saturday, and fixtures of importance that will follow in the circuit are those at Hawera next week, with Rangitikei in a month s time. Fields for the opening day at New Plymouth are not quite as large as might have been expected, the Taranaki Cup field being specially weak. The totalisator at New Plymouth is operated on the win-and-place system, and in the majority of events there will be three place dividends, the Hurdles, Cup and Okato Hack fields being sufficient for two place dividends only. Recent rains have been beneficial te the tracks at New Plymouth and the going, though a trifle on the hard side, should nevertheless be good.

The meeting will open with the Waitara Hurdles, for which Cletrac may be better backed than'the elect of Dulieu’s pair. Even Money and Kentucky Song. A dozen made the acceptance for N'gamotu Juvenile, included being another of the Beau Pere youngsters in, Sudan, who should be one of the wellsupported candidates. Cute Mollify and Namara may be next best. Stretto is topweight in the Flying Handicap, but at the difference in weights she may find it hard to head off some of the lightly-weighted division. Great Hope impressed by his success at Ashhurst and may be better backed than Brunhild and Clessamor. Eleven are down to contest the Moturoa Electric Hack, and of these a trio that should be prominent are Fafner, Golden Orchid and Basra. Taitoru and Grateful have dropped out of the Taranaki Cup, leaving seven engaged. If tine Whetu were at his best he would have a wonderful chance. Wildflower has done well in recent essays and appeals as the logical favourite. Lady Kyra won over a distance at New Plymouth during the midsummer meeting. Sergia should do w-ell and Red Sand and Cheval de Volee may be in the picture. Wild-, flower and One Whetu should be preferred to Sergia. For the nine-furlong Okato Hack Handicap the rehandicapped Naughty Marietta may do better than the consistent Silvanus. Perhaps one of the best races of the day will be the Taranaki Plate, run over seven furlongs at weight-for-age. Surella. Ohanga. Vadanoe, Race Boy, Pam's Choice, Gold Glare, Joe Louis, St. Cedric and the Relative-Icing bracket appear to comprise the possibles. Relative finished fourth in the Douro Cup and she should see her backers through to-day, with Surella and Gold Glare likely among the others. If reserved for the concluding event, i the Timaru Hack Handicap, Silvanusl will have many friends. The topweight may meet with strongest opposition from Lifeguard and Winsome Lu.
