TRINIDAD RIOTING
COMMISSION’S ENQUIRY ORIGIN OF THE TROUBLE. LONDON, Feb. 1. The Colonial Office Commission investigating the riots in Trinidad and Tobagc n June of last year finds that the origin of the disturbances was general dissatisfaction reaching its climax when the cost of living outstripped the wage increases. During the riots Police Corporal King was thrown from a window and while on the ground with a broken leg was covered with oil and burned to death. Police rescuers were attacked and a sub-inspector was shot dead. The Commission mentions the Government’s hesitant policy in dealing with hooligans, and recommends the establishment of a Labour Department and an Industrial Arbitration Court. It also favours a growth of organised trade unions, becauie the absence of the machinery for collective bargaining was one of th.- chief causes of the outbreaks. It is stated that employers urged the Commission to recommend ft garrison of troops to preserve internal security, but the Commission did not favour that, because it would create added bitterness and suspicion.
